Part four of our beloved series picks up immediately where part three left off after giving us a recap of the events from the first three movies. Is it really necessary to start each movie off with a recap? Sheesh. Anyway, after having received an ax to the skull courtesy of Chris, Jason has been left for dead in the barn where the final battle took place. The police and ambulance crew have shown up to cart off the corpses, both of the victims and of Jason. Jason's body winds up in the mortuary of the local hospital, where attendant Axel (Bruce Mahler) is trying to score with Nurse Morgan (Lisa Freeman). Unfortunately for these two lovers, Jason isn't quite dead yet...
Meanwhile, near Camp Crystal Lake, the Jarvis family is watching their new neighbors move in. Mrs. Jarvis (Joan Freeman) moved out here with her daughter Trish (Kimberly Beck) and son Tommy (Corey Feldman) to get away from the fast city life after she divorced her husband. Seems as though things won't be staying very quiet around here for long, as the new neighbors consist of Jimmy (Crispin Glover), Paul (Alan Hayes), Ted (Lawrence Monoson), Doug (Peter Barton), Sara (Barbara Howard), and Samantha (Julie Aronson)... four horny, teenaged males and two horny, teenaged females. It wouldn't be a proper evening without a party, and that's just what happens when the group is joined by twins Tina (Camilla More) and Terri (Carey More)... and we all know what happens to teenagers who party, smoke pot, and have premarital sex when Jason (Ted White behind the mask this time) is around.
Here we have the first sequel that isn't a damned-near clone of the previous entry in the series. Sure, the same general plot is there - group of teenagers, Camp Crystal Lake, Jason kills them all of, yatta yatta yatta. However, there were finally some new ideas thrown in, which definitely made the movie that much more interesting. The first new idea was that of a Jason hunter - Rob (Erich Anderson) is lurking around the area, having followed the murder spree of Jason after his sister was killed by him in part two. He's not very successful in his attempts to stop Jason, but I suppose it's the thought that counts. The other semi-new idea is Tommy's mask-making abilities, which wind up being used against Jason. Sure, this was reminiscent of when Ginny pretended to be Jason's mother in part two, but it was different enough to not feel like a total rehash.
My only gripe with this entry in the series is that it took much too long to really get started. After watching Jason dispose of his first two victims in the opening of the film, the movie pretty much grinds to a halt while we're introduced to the numerous characters that he'll later be chopping up. Sure, it's to be expected that the main characters need a little bit more time, and it's also expected that the human fodder would get a brief introduction. However, I really didn't need thirty minutes of seeing how the teens interact with one another, since it was pretty damned obvious that none of them would be the one to survive the film. On the plus side, all of this time with the teens gave us plenty of nudity, something that was missing from the previous film. Sure, it's nice to watch, but damned... after the first five scenes, I was begging Jason to show up and get started already.
Once it gets started, this is definitely one of the better entries thus far. There's an impressive body count, great gore effects (handled by Tom Savini), plenty of T&A, and just enough new ideas to make it all seem fresh. 7/10.

interesting trivia note. The actor that played
Jason was so disgusted at the way the kids were
treated he told the producer he didnt want his
names in the credits.

What the hell happened to the mom? Ugh, I hate
when they just end a movie for the sake of it,
because you know there's going to be a sequel to
wrap it up. I was sort of disappointed in this
one. The first one started it, the second was him
becoming Jason, the third gave him his mask, and
this was just a chance to kill a few more people.

It wasn't just a chance to kill more people, it
was supposed to end it. It it's like this: The
first one started it, the second was him becoming
Jason, the third gave him his mask, and this one
ended it. It's just too bad that they had to milk
the franchise for all its worth, and now they have
2 "Final" movies, and still counting. Still, you
can always just accept that fact that it did end
with this one as part 5 seems to be a stand alone,
6-8 have their own story and feel to them 9 and 10
are just hilarious, and then we have the VS
series. So in the end there are 5 series in total
so far IMO.
