Jason Voorhees, having barely survived a wound to his shoulder from his own machete, is back to revenge on all that visit "his" woods. A new group of friends come over to party at an area close to the campsite. This time, Jason will be stronger than ever, and getting a hockey mask from one of those friends.

In the third movie of this series, we start things out with a brief recap of the ending of Part II. Well, brief isn't really the proper word, as we watch nearly the entire final ten minutes of the movie, but I suppose a refresher was in order. After all is said and done, we catch up with Edna (Cheri Maugans) and Harold Hatcher (Steve Susskind), the husband-and-wife owners of a small town store. When Edna isn't nagging at Harold over his weight problems, she's wrapped up in the news regarding the brutal slayings that occurred in this very area... it doesn't take long for Jason Voorhees (now played by Richard Brooker) to show up and dispose of the two. Meanwhile, Rick (Paul Kratka) has invited his girlfriend Chris (Dana Kimmell) and some of her friends to come stay at his little country cottage for the weekend... the deal is accepted, and Chris brings along practical joker Shelly (Larry Zerner), Vera (Catherine Parks), Andy (Jeffrey Rogers), Debbie (Tracie Savage), Chili (Rachel Howard) and Chuck (David Katims). As the massive group of friends start to settle in and get down to sweet love-making, Rick tries to make his move on Chris... only to find out that Chris is extremely nervous about being out here, as she barely survived an encounter with Jason some time ago. As if Jason wasn't enough to worry about, the group also has to put up with a pissed off biker gang consisting of Ali (Nick Savage), Fox (Gloria Charles) and Loco (Kevin O'Brien), thanks to Shelly running over their motorcycles while picking up some things at the store. So, to sum things up - we have eleven people in and around an old house that is (assumedly... it's never directly said) near Camp Crystal Lake, lots of weed-smoking, even more love-making, and it's Friday The 13th; gee, I wonder what happens next in this plot of ours?
If you somehow managed to guess that Jason shows up and adds ten more victims to his body count, well, give yourself a cookie. There's nothing new or innovative in this one, but it does hold a special place in my heart nonetheless. By far the best aspect of this movie is that we finally get to see the Jason that we all know and love - the hockey-mask wearing, machete-wielding, killing machine. We also witness a few more staples of the series - horrible acting (no awards would be won by the actors in the first two films, but this one....), inventive kills, and more horny teenagers than you could shake a stick at (funny enough though, there's only a split-second worth of nudity here, which I found to be odd). All of this, save for the nudity bit, is to be expected from a F13 movie though, so all was good. The only real downfall was the fact that this was originally shown in 3D when it made its theatrical run. Now, I'm sure it looked great while wearing 3D glasses and having things thrown towards the camera, but when you view it on a non-3D format (ie, DVD), it comes off looking pretty lame. There's many, many shots in the film where nothing much occurs other than things that would have taken advantage of the 3D effect... a yo-yo being played with, a kid playing baseball, a guy cooking popcorn, a guy playing with the clothesline, etc etc. Had the DVD also been in 3D, or had some of these shots been shortened, this wouldn't have been a problem... but as is, it resulted in lots of wasted time with the movie at hand.
When it comes to the storyline, nothing has really changed from the first two entries in the series. A rather large group of teenagers show up at-or-around Crystal Lake, have some fun, Jason shows up, the body count rises, one person survives. Even the ending is eerily reminiscent of the first one, as the sole survivor winds up in a canoe on the lake before a figure jumps out of the water and drags her down. While I realize that the same basic storyline should be done in order to keep the feel of the movie the same, there really should have been something more added to the storyline to keep it fresh. However, I suppose that extra time went towards putting together the 3D effects and not towards some new ideas. This really seems to be the running theme of the movie - even though the kill methods have been improved in this entry, the general feeling of the movie is "been there, done that." And, to take a quote from my review of Part II:
Just for the record, I've seen each of the movies in the series and I'm fully aware that the same basic thing occurs in each... but even with that standard storyline of the series in mind, this one was much too close to the original and the first sequel in terms of storyline and the way it played out.
Fans of Jason won't be disappointed, and this would have scored much higher had it been more original... however, it was much too similar to the first two entries, so I figure that a 6/10 is in order.

This is where Jason finally gets his mask and
becomes the persona of Jason Vorhees, so I think
this one has to be placed higher than the previous
two, just because it really sent the series in a
far different direction. Without this one, I
doubt we would have seen so many sequels because
-- without the mask -- what's so scary about
Jason? Though the premise is the same and the
death scenes just decent, I still think we have to
treat this film as the start of something big,
which it was and is. 7/10.

This is by far my favourite. It just seems to
dark, and still scary while the others are not
anymore. Sure some of the effects look terrible
because they were trying to make it look 3D, but
the movie still owns my mouth. I actually care
about all the characters. I love them all except
for the stoner chick who just couldn't act worth
shit. But we have Shelly.....Shelly! Best
character ever.

Aside from 5, my favourite in the series. Not only
because this is where he dons the mask, but
because the characters are lovable, the story is
fun, and Jason tallies up some nice kills.
10/10

You need to check them shits out in 3-D. Its not
half bad really. But yeah, I agree with what you
said. Minus the part 5 comment.

Pretty great, the 3-D is a wonderful aesthetic,
but the HUGE problem with this entry lies more in
the fact that aside from the kills in the
opening, NOTHING HAPPENS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE
FILM. Even the first one didn't cheat us out of
rampant slaughter-filled domination for the
length. The fucking bikers don't even die into
well over half-way through the film.
Great
movie, but DAMN it could have tried a bit harder
instead of relying on its novelty. 7.5/10
