I am a huge fan of the Left 4 Dead series of video games. My friends and I have easily sunk over a hundred hours into those games, and this is the only series that I have ever felt that attached to. Hell, I love the series so much that I even reviewed the majority of those porno parodies just because, well, they were based on these games. So, when I heard about the upcoming fan movies (yes, plural), I was pretty excited and anxiously awaited their release dates. Today, I watched one of them and shed a little tear of hate.
This version of Left 4 Dead is a short film, clocking in at just under ten minutes. There's not much to the storyline: zombies have taken over a major city, and three survivors - Zoey (Alexandra Mathews), Louis (William Catlett), and Francis (Dave Williams) - are holed up in a safe room. What happened to Bill, you ask? Play the downloadable content for either of the games and you'll see. Anyway, they hear about other survivors on the radio and attempt to get to them, and along the way, they encounter numerous zombies and a witch. From there... well, that's about the time that I rage-faced.
05:55. Five minutes and fifty-five seconds. That is the exact moment in the film where it goes from "great" to "what the fuck is this shit", and no, I am not exaggerating: you can literally narrow it down to the exact second. You see, the film looks and sounds great. The actors play their roles to perfection, they look like their video game counterparts, the sets look tremendous, and there is a lot of attention paid to detail. Some of the CGI used for the gun battles was a little spotty, but I could overlook that. The zombies themselves looked nice, the filmmakers used high-end equipment to create the film, and the entire affair looks professional - this isn't some low-budget indie flick, I could easily see something like this playing in theaters.
Then, 05:55 rolls around. I'm going to spoil the shit out of it, so skip this paragraph if you don't want spoilers. Still here? Alright, the witch is straddling Louis and about to kill him, when she is killed... by Master Chief, of Halo fame. This unwelcome cameo is soon followed by Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud of Gears of War, and Ghost of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 fame.
This completely killed the movie for me. It went from a serious, respectful handling of the Left 4 Dead series to something that a thirteen-year-old would come up with, and personally, I just hated it. Those cameos felt completely out of place, and regardless of whether or not you like the games represented, I doubt that you will share a different opinion. They all eventually team up to kill off a tank, and remember that thing I said above about the film looking very professional? That went out the window during this fight. It's almost as if two different companies put this movie together, one consisting of video game fans who also knew what they were doing in the film world, with the other being the polar opposite. A shame, really.
Half of the film gets a 10/10, and the other half gets a 0/10. Average it out and you get a 5/10, which I guess sounds about right, even though the film left me with a horrible taste in my mouth. View it here.

I for one, kind of liked it. Now, I'm not saying
it wasn't stupid, but if I had the means, I have a
stack of wack-ass crossovers I'd love to throw
together myself (Jason vs. Predator tops the
list), so I can kind of see where this guy was
coming from with this. The execution was a little
definitely off with the characters just popping up
out of nowhere; it would have worked better if it
was about 25 minutes or so. That way characters
can be properly introduced, the whole concept can
be properly advertised, and people can enjoy the
tongue-in-cheek fun factor from the word go. As it
stands now, it's a slap in the face to the
hardcore L4D fans who were getting excited to see
such an amazing adaptation unfold before them;
shit, it almost borders on trolling.
