During a trip to Germany to scatter their grandfather's ashes, German-American brothers Todd and Jan discover Beerfest, the secret Olympics of downing stout, and want to enter the contest to defend their family's beer-guzzling honor. Their Old Country cousins sneer at the Yanks' chances, prompting the siblings to return to America to prepare for a showdown the following year. --TMDb

And so, the knuckleheads who brought us Super Troopers and Club Dread, otherwise known as Broken Lizard, offer their newest effort, Beerfest. Here, we find a pair of German Americans returning their recently deceased grandfather's ashes to Deutschland, a family tradition. They find their relatives in a secret, international beer drinking tournament called 'Beerfest.' However, it turns out that their grandfather is a complete disgrace as he had stolen the secret family recipe right before escaping to America. Not only that, but the boys' beloved grandmother was apparently just a whore back in Germany. With these sound shots against their honor, the two brothers issue a beer drinking challenge and of course, are completely obliterated. Returning home in shame, they vow to return at the following year's Beerfest and reclaim their honor. They start putting together the first U.S.A. Beerfest Drinking Team, including their nerdy, Jewish scientist friend for his knowledge of liquid physics as well as a couple buddies from back in the day, both exceptional in the realm of beer drinking. During their year in "training," they boys discover more secrets from their family past, as well as the obligatory overcoming of differences within the group.

Might as well get it out of the way early on. The answer is no. No, this does not measure up to Super Troopers. But it's still pretty damned funny. If you've seen their earlier flicks, you have a pretty good idea of the maturity level of the humor you're in for (I'm assuming Club Dread is also in the same vein, haven't seen that one though.) Obviously, the jokes found here are pretty much all alcohol based, and they come at you with all the subtlety of a fourteen year old making fart noises with his hand in his armpit. If you're not too high and mighty to find a guy nonchalantly jacking off a frog funny, you might get a few laughs out of this one. Now, this was a bit of a double edge sword in my opinion, as they had a tendency to take these jokes just a bit too far, which killed the realism in a few scenes, say, a man falling into a vat of beer and creating a huge whirlpool by sucking in the beer. While the going-ons in Super Troopers were outlandish to an insane degree, they were still theoretically realistic, which I think makes for a much funnier movie.

If you're a fan of juvenile, toilet humor go ahead and pick this up. Between this and Super Troopers, I'm definitely looking forward to Broken Lizard's future releases, despite the negative things I've heard about Club Dread. Oh, and there are plenty of women going topless throughout, which is never a bad thing. 7/10.

This had to be one of the worst comedies I have EVER seen. I caught it at the $1.00 cinema because I loved "Super Troopers" and have a weird 'guilty pleasure' feeling towards "Club Dread". This one was schlock. The humor was not there. The performances were not there. Whatever novelty these guys had going for them has evidently been lost. "Beerfest" is one of the worst comedies EVER, period. 0/10.

Thank God someone said it. Everyone I talk to loves this movie. I thought it was absolute garbage. I honestly don't know if I laughed once. Super Troopers was great, even though it took me about 4 years to finally watch it. But this, wow. Terrible. 0/10 from me as well.

the broken lizard team hit gold with their first release, Super Troopers, and since then have been just been hitting bronze and silver. Bronze being Club Dread, Silver being this. I actually thought it was a pretty funny movie, some stupid parts to it, but it seemed like they were enjoying themselves while making it, which i believe lends a pretty big hand to the laughs.

I think this is the best that they released. I dunno why. When I first heard of it I refused to watch it. Then my friend put it on and I really enjoyed it. Seen it around 10 times since. Only saw the first half of Club Dread and it seemed Club Dreadful. I just didn't get Super Troopers. I was better the 2nd time, but still kinda boring I think.

Club Dreadful? That line was worse than this entire movie.
