Connections: The Dukes Of Hazzard

In Georgia's dusty Hazzard County, the close-knit Duke cousins, Bo and Luke, deliver Uncle Jesse's fine moonshine. Zooming down the rough backwoods on their powerful muscle-car--the tangerine 1969 Dodge Charger, General Lee--the boys easily outrun the corrupt county commissioner Boss Hogg's forces, and his loyal henchman, Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane. However, when the clan of moonshiners are left with nothing, only Bo, Luke, and Daisy Duke can save their farm, as the day of the annual road rally approaches. Can the Dukes of Hazzard beat Hogg's champion, Billy Prickett, save the day, and their beloved home? --IMDb

I don't know why I ever stepped foot inside the theatre to see "The Dukes of Hazzard". I was looking for some mindless fun to make me giggle for a while, and a more logical self would have opted for either "Stealth" or "Sky High" -- and they had to be leagues better than this utter waste of time. There is just no excuse for this film. Nearly two hours of my life were wasted and I have no way of getting them back. Jay Chandrasekhar should be ashamed of himself for this pile of dung, and this even sullies the hilarity of his previous films, "Super Troopers" and "Club Dread". Could he have intentionally meant for this film to be this terrible? If so, he did everything right to make sure that it happened. "The Dukes of Hazzard" is not only the worst film of 2005, but one of the worst films I have ever seen. It almost topped "Jackass: The Movie". What a coincidence that both films star the same gentleman. This film blew harder than Elton John in a bar filled with sailors.

Johnny Knoxville and Sean William Scott star as Bo and Luke Duke, two cousins who wreak havoc throughout Hazzard County, Georgia, which the filmmakers would have you believe is the most backwoods heap of redneck in the entire world. The boys help their Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson) cultivate the moonshine business, while seducing farmer's daughters, driving at top speed for no apparent reason, and giving Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds) and Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (M.C. Gainey) something to send their nerves to the cleaner. When the boys find out that Boss Hogg is secretly planning to turn Hazzard County into a coal mine, they set out to foil his plan, and win the big race. Oh yes -- I forgot to mention the side plot involving a local hero returning to town for the annual race, a race that happens to be something Luke desperately wants to win. There is also another sideplot involving Jessica Simpson fighting to keep her panties up. She actually wins her battle, fortunately.

What makes "The Dukes of Hazzard" so miserable is that there is not one humorous scene in the entire film. There were scenes that were intended to be humorous, as when Bo and Luke are stuck on a freeway in Atlanta, and are bewildered as to why they are being harassed by the surrounding motorists. This was not humorous. There is another scene involving the University of Georgia campus and a parade of sorority rooms. This was not humorous. "The Dukes of Hazzard" has to be the worst television script adaptation of all-time, if not the champion. There is nothing of what made the original series such a success. I hated the series pretty badly, but would gladly watch every episode twice before sitting through this film again. It was literally one hundred and twenty minutes of stupidity laid out for the entire audience to see. How could Warner Brothers greenlight a script like this? How could Burt Reynolds start sucking again? How can Johnny Knoxville sleep at night?

But, where would "The Dukes of Hazzard" be without a colorful cast of rascals. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott are perfectly cast as Bo and Luke; however, they both deliver amazingly pathetic performances. Seann William Scott's Southern accent is beyond terrible, and Johnny Knoxville has the charisma of a toilet plunger. Jessica Simpson gives the googly eyed country boys something to look at, but her performance is as flat as her...oh wait...as Uma Thurman's lady friends. The only bright spot in the entire film was Willie Nelson, who was obviously just happy to be there. He had fun with his role and made his scene something special. I also enjoyed the cameos from some of the Broken Lizard crowd, including Kevin Heffernan as Sheev, the local moron, and James Roday as Billy Prickett, the local racing legend. They added a slight amount of amusement, but not enough to save this piece of garbage from the gutter. They get a C+ for effort.

So, in conclusion, you would be better off sitting on hot coals than watching "The Dukes of Hazzard". Lovers of the series will be highly disappointed with the lack of originality. Those of you, like myself, who loathed the show and its treatment of typical Southern stereotypes will probably walk out halfway through. I should have. "The Dukes of Hazzard" is one scene after another of boring chases, redundant Southern cliches, and some of the worst Southern acting you have ever seen. My advice to the director -- stay with your usual group of guys -- you actually do some decent work. The mainstream and Broken Lizard do not mix well, and neither do "The Dukes of Hazzard" and common logic. By the end of the film, the Dukes had caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage, and possibly caused the deaths of several law enforcement officers. Joe Don Baker pardons them of their crimes. Oh my, what a logical and moral world we live in today.

1/10.
