The twisted tale of Kenneth, socially insecure technical writer who forms an obsessive relationship with "Nikki", an anatomically accurate silicone sex doll he orders over the Internet. Because of his experience with his new toy, Kenneth's life takes a turn for the better when his newfound romantic skills attract the attention of Lisa, a co-worker at his office. But when the doll's jealous personality invades his consciousness, Kenneth becomes trapped in a perverse triangle, torn between the dominating, silicone Nikki and the flesh-and-blood Lisa. --IMDb

A couple of years ago, I stumbled across a site that sells highly-realistic sex dolls. They're made out of silicone for that natural "feel", and although they do have some minor visual flaws, they look frighteningly real. I clicked around for a few minutes, then left the site and forgot all about them. In another part of the world, someone found the same site as I did, but instead of exiting said site and forgetting about it, they decided to order one and make a movie about it.

Kenneth Winslow (Desmond Harrington), a single and lonely instruction manual writer, is the man who makes the purchase after a co-worker shows off the website to him. It doesn't take long for the huge crate containing his new girlfriend to show up at his apartment, and it takes even less time for him to break her out of the box and get busy with "the honeymoon", if you know what I mean. A few days pass and all is normal (well, as normal as it can be considering that he's talking to and fucking a plastic doll on a nightly basis), but then he meets his new assistant Lisa (Melissa Sagemiller). Lisa has been assigned to assist him on his latest project, and although Kenneth objects to this at first since he prefers working alone, the two start to form a relationship and spend more and more time together after hours. Kenneth finally has a normal life with a flesh-and-blood girlfriend, but then his sex doll starts to get jealous and all hell breaks loose. Is our hero losing his mind, or are there really some sort of supernatural happenings going on? That's the question that is posed as this entertaining thriller moves along. Rip Torn and Udo Kier also make appearances in fairly minor roles.

I was pretty close to picking this movie up back when it was first released, but then I thought better of it and decided to leave it on the shelf. After all, I was thinking, a movie about a killer sex doll (whether real or implied) is definitely scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas, and it probably wouldn't be good for much else other than a few cheap laughs. I'm sure that there's a couple of readers reading this who are probably thinking the same thing, but it was actually a damned good offering with a very intriguing storyline.

Sure, there's some obvious similarities to May in both the general plot and the events towards the end, but there's still enough original material here to make it worth a rental at the very least due to how the story plays out and the strong performances of the cast. It also didn't hurt that the sex doll itself looked quite eerie, and I wasn't alone in my belief that housing one of those would just be too creepy to even consider.

The best thing about this movie is also the one thing that may turn some viewers off, if you'll pardon the pun. The pacing is slow and deliberate (much like the aforementioned May), but in my view, this worked. It never feels padded or redundant, and it allows plenty of time for the tension to build and the storyline to unravel. Speaking of the storyline, that's also the main emphasis of the movie along with the characters themselves. There's very little gore, and even though the story contains both a sex doll and a real-life relationship as the main plot points, there's very little "bedroom action" involved. If you're looking for something with the pacing, body or booby count of a slasher flick, then this definitely isn't one for you.

If you liked May, you'll like this even though it isn't quite as good. If you hated May, don't even bother with this one: you'll despise it. Personally, I loved May and felt that this one was shockingly good, much better than it had any right to be considering the nature of the storyline and the direct-to-video status of the release. 8/10.

What I thought was a nice touch and really neat was the concept of showing those disfiguring bruises and marks on a few people (which is talked about on the commentary).
8.4/10
