Alright, let's see if I can get this straight here. Cheerleader Massacre was an unofficial sequel in the Slumber Party Massacre series, even though it was very loosely tied to the previous movies, which themselves weren't incredibly related to begin with. Now we have Cheerleader Massacre 2, and in keeping with tradition, it's a movie that isn't really connected to those other movies in any way. Would that actually make this Slumber Party Massacre 5 instead of Cheerleader Massacre 2? Whatever you want to call it, it's another in a long line of cheesy slasher flicks, chock-full of babes, blood, and boobs. It's a winning recipe in this household, so how did this particular movie fare?

As always, let's cover the storyline first, what little there is. It begins with a bus-load of cheerleaders out in the middle of the desert, on their way to a cheerleading camp, who encounter some sort of flying disc object. Naturally, the driver stops the bus and gets out to see what it was, and that's exactly what happens: he sees that it is three rotating buzzsaws on one circular frame that flies through the air like a frisbee. Oh, and it also homes in on its prey before hacking them to pieces, which is exactly what happens to the driver and all of the cheerleaders.

We then cut over to Anna (Julia Lehman) and Janice (Michele Boyd), the stars of the movie, who are also on their way to that very same cheerleading camp. Anna is the sympathetic one, a cute and bubbly blonde who is faced with financial problems, while Janice is the tomboy who is only there to support her friend - yes, she's at cheerleading camp, and no, she's not a cheerleader. Just roll with it. It seems that Anna is on the red team, and at this camp, they will be competing with the blue team for a chance at a $10,000 scholarship. Unfortunately, the blue team never showed up; I wonder why? It doesn't take long before more metal robotic contraptions appear and pick the ladies off one by one, but who could be behind it? Could it be the sleazy camp owner? The creepy caretaker? The cocky security guard? Or could it be - wait for it - the one person that you'd least expect?

It's possible that the plot may have slightly revealed that this isn't exactly a story-centric film, but that's alright. It's meant to show off the staples of any respectable slasher flick, that being gallons of blood, some inventive kills, loads of boobs, and incredibly far-fetched twists. Fans of these movies should know what to expect here, but everyone else should know that that's the extent of what you're going to get. The storyline only serves to cram in more of the "good stuff", the acting is mostly cringe-worthy, and the entire thing is just one big pile of cheesy goodness.

If you can accept that previous statement, and if that's the sort of thing that you enjoy, you'll get a moderate amount of entertainment from this. It's certainly nothing to brag about, but it does have a few things going for it. For starters, I have to give the filmmakers credit for at least trying something inventive here with the killer robots. It almost had a Puppet Master atmosphere going on, what with the different robots and their distinctive kill styles. There's the aforementioned flying buzzsaw, there's a scythe that hides in the ground before chopping its victim in half, a little circular guy that shoots out razor wire, one that can transform into an anvil in midair, and a couple of other surprise entries. While not the epitome of originality, this was definitely much more inspired than the traditional "guy with a butcher knife" that we've come to expect.

I'm sure that you can figure out how the robots kill their victims based on their descriptions up there, and when it comes to the special effects, the film is fairly hit or miss. Some of the kill methods are pretty cool, while others are incredibly uninspired (buzzsaw to the gut, bloody shirt, that's a wrap). It almost exclusively uses CGI effects for the more elaborate effects (decapitations, a person cut down the middle, etc.), and these effects are also hit or miss. Some of them are quite good, and while they're not award-worthy, they're definitely better than expected. Other shots, however, don't fare as well and come off looking incredibly bad on screen. There are a few examples of both, but the majority fall somewhere in the middle - not amazing and not terrible, but just enough to get the job done.

As for the casting, well... what do you expect from a movie like this? There are a few ladies who rise slightly above average in the acting department, a handful that straddle that line, and a few that are painful to watch. It's pretty obvious that most of them weren't cast for their acting abilities, but rather for their willingness to shed their clothes... and yes, most of them do just that. In fact, and it feels weird to type this, I'd even go so far as to say that too many of them did that. I understand that "boobs" and "babes" are a traditional staple in these films, and I both respect and welcome that; however, this film sometimes crossed that line and almost ventured into softcore territory.

In the end, I'm going to have to go with a slightly above-average rating for this film, but as I've mentioned numerous times in other reviews, I'm a huge sucker for slasher flicks like this. If you aren't quite as big a fan of them as I am, or if you're looking for something with a little more substance, you might want to dock a few points from the score. Personally though, I think that a 7/10 is about right.
