Serial killer Charles Lee Ray is back! This time his girlfriend Tiffany has revived him, once again in the form of the popular "Chucky" doll. Shortly after the "happy" couple's reunion, Chucky kills her and brings her back in the form of a girl's bridal doll. The two then embark on a killing spree en route to dig up Ray's corpse, which was buried with a Satanic voodoo charm capable of bringing back the dead. --IMDb

The third sequel in the Child's Play series is a pure horror comedy, with a storyline that goes a little something like this. Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) was the girlfriend of Charles Lee Ray, up until the point where he got killed off in the first movie. She's found out about him transferring his soul over to the Good Guy doll, and as such, pays a police officer to steal the doll out of an evidence locker so that she can bring her lover back to the world of the living. Using a "Voodoo For Dummies" guide, she's able to bring Chucky back to life... but, the relationship between the human Tiffany and the doll Chucky doesn't quite work out how she thought it would. With some twists in the storyline and a little bit of movie magic, Tiffany winds up in her own doll alongside Chucky, and now they must both find human hosts to put their souls into. However, the only way they can do this is by using an amulet that Charles Lee Ray was buried with, and his corpse is laying in a graveyard in New Jersey. Enter two teenage lovers by the name of Jade (Katherine Heigl) and Jesse (Nick Stabile). Jade's uncle / legal guardian Warren Kincaid (John Ritter) is trying to keep the two apart, and is being quite successful due to his role as the chief of police in this small town. So, when Jesse receives an offer via phone from Tiffany of one thousand dollars to transport a few dolls to New Jersey, he jumps at the chance... this will give him the perfect opportunity (and funds) to elope with Jade. Of course, the body count rises as they head to New Jersey, with Jade thinking that Jesse is the murderer, Jesse thinking the same of Jade, and the authorities thinking that they have a new Bonnie & Clyde on their hands.

I've yet to see the newest entry in the series ("Seed Of Chucky"), but thus far, this movie is my personal favorite from the series. Instead of trying to make a straight horror film revolving around two cabbage patch doll ripoffs, this one takes the decidedly more appropriate path of a horror comedy. Sure, part two had some splashes of comedy here and there, but this was the only entry in the series that throws the humor out left and right, even parodying itself at times ("If my life story was a movie, it'd need three or four sequels to do it justice"). That's not to say that all of the horror elements have been stripped out, though; the amount of gore, violence, murder, and sheer anarchy is more abundant here than in either of the previous three movies. The way that director Ronny Yu managed to get the perfect mix of horror and comedy in this entry made it out to be, in my opinion, the most enjoyable of the series so far.

The acting here was a bit lackluster, but that pretty much goes without saying when it comes to a movie like this. Katherine Heigl (Jade) and Nick Stabile (Jesse) are pretty bland in their lead roles, and bring nothing to the table that hasn't already been seen and done in countless other teen horror roles. Shockingly, John Ritter (Warren) actually manages to pull off the best acting role on the human side of things, though it seems as though he could have got just a bit more screen time than what he wound up with. Through the magic of special effects and voice-over work by Brad Dourif (Chucky) and Jennifer Tilly (Tiffany), the two dolls brought about the most entertaining overall performances in the movie. The special effects used to animate them were great in most of the scenes, the facial expressions were hilarious, and the voice jobs just added to the goodness found here.

The best of the series, unless "Seed Of Chucky" manages to do better. Time will tell on that one, but for now, this one grabs that glory. If you want a fun horror movie that doesn't do a whole lot of scaring and is extremely far from original, but ends up delivering a good time... well, you couldn't go wrong with this one. 8/10.

What about it?

So far, the best in the series. I like how it didn't take itself seriously at all and was just a fun, campy killer doll movie. It's also awesome to see Jennifer Tilly in anything.

8/10
