Unlike a lot of misleading movie titles out there, this one actually has plenty to do with an Opera. A little more than half of the movie takes place at an opera house, the rest in Betty's home and other miscellaneous places. The camera angles alone make this movie interesting. Such as when the camera is movie backwards in the wardrobe room and every foot a table with different wardrobe tools pop up. It's very nice when you actually see it.

Resourceful killings like very few others. A head getting slammed into a coat hanger, crows pecking someone's eye out, a dagger going in the neck and coming up threw the mouth, an upper part of a females chest getting ripped open with a pair of fabric scissors and one I could just not throw into the pile. This crazed fan that is killing these people manages to shoot a bullet through a peephole in a door, going into a woman's eye, coming out the back of her head, and then hitting a phone in the background. To make it even better, the several different camera angles that were used just made the whole thing beyond any work of art.

A little shtick that was put together for this film that I found incredibly original was how the crazed fan would make Betty watch as he murdered his victims. He would tie her up to something taping her mouth shut, and having a pair of six pins on a piece of tape, taped to the bottoms of her eyes. That way if she tried to shut her eyes, they would rip apart. This only happened two times in the movie which I thought was good because they didn't over use it. It's a shame when something as sick as that happens in a movie, only to be used over and over again, then brought back in a different film, then eventually loosing it's originality.

Most of the cast pulls off the acting very well. There's a couple of folks to who over play the fear, but it's not really noticeable because you're so intrigued with what's about to happen next. There's very few dull moments in the film. Every moment the story progresses, it makes you wonder even more about everything going on. It keeps you guessing right until you think the movie is about to end... does a total 180°, and then keeps you guessing some more. I personally don't care for opera's, but this movie is wonderful. It's a shame opera's aren't really like this.

Final Conclusion: 10/10

There is something about a Dario Argento film that separates it from every other film style out there. "Opera" is not the best he has given us, but even the worse Dario Argento film is better than 75% of the best Hollywood is churning out these days. "Opera" scared me and was nice to look at, but something was just missing. Check it out though. 6/10.

I would have to say that Opera was a decent film. And I agree with bluemeanie that something was missing. This movie had some great shots, but unfortunately fails in the scripting department. Some of the deaths were great, but we are again treated to some downright ridiculous moments, even for an Argento film. There were so many logical and technical faults that the whole movie wound up kind of silly. The ending was pretty unnecessary as well. Argento should have listened to Orion and completely cut the last 5 or so minutes of the movie. While it was a great twist, it is immediately ruined shortly afterward. All in all it was pretty decent, but could have been a lot better if given more thought. 6/10

I enjoyed this. I saw it 1987 at a horror convention up in Albany. I sat very close to Dario as he worked the projector showing this movie. The needles taped to her face is classic.

The projector kept shutting down, and he was getting a little frustrated. He has GREASY DIRTY hair. He didn't smell to good either.
