"Do You Like Hitchcock?" was the last film I watched in the Argento box set. I really didn't have high hopes for this movie because of the constant terrible reviews on Internet Movie Database, and the fact that it is just a TV movie. So when watching the movie, I tried to keep an open mind. But I was still unable to enjoy this dull bore fest. It seems that Argento has lost his touch since the late 1980's. While he still had a few good films, they were nowhere near his work from the 70's and 80's.

"Do You Like Hitchcock?" takes the basic premise of Hitchcock's "Rear Window", but with it's own twist. Giulio (Elio Germano) is a college film student who enjoys the work of Alfred Hitchcock. He even plans to use his movies for his thesis in class. He starts to become obsessed with spying on people out of his window, most importantly Sasha (Elisabetta Rocchetti) who lives directly across the street. One night he hears a scream come from Sasha's building. When he arrives to the window, he finds out that her mother has been murdered. Giulio starts to become obsessed with the murder so much that he can't help but solve it himself. Unfortunately for him, the killer knows of his intentions, and plans to put an end to it. Giulio, being a big Hitchcock fan, finds a connection between the murders, and the movie "Strangers on a Train." Giulio can never fully complete the puzzle, so he must go the extra mile to finally put the mystery to rest.

This movie was pretty painful to watch. Not because it was so bad, but because it was utterly boring. We are treated to some great suspenseful scenes early on in the film, but then it all comes to a screeching halt until the final act. There's just too many unnecessary scenes and dialogue throughout the entire film. The main character loves to visit the video store to rent movies, and each time we have to witness minutes of boring dialogue, and the scenes just seem completely useless. These scenes could have been trimmed down tremendously to save time, and more importantly our patience. How many times do we need to see someone drop a movie off, then talk about how great looking a woman is?

Argento is a man with great ideas, but is unable to execute them well sometimes. This ultimately leaves certain scenes completely dumb and laughable. Giulio decides to break into an apartment for more clues, but he is caught and is forced to make a getaway on his moped. Argento wanted to make this scene suspenseful by making Giulio break his ankle while trying to escape and trying to ride the moped. Unfortunately is comes off as completely ridiculous and downright stupid. Many people believe that he was trying to add a little comedy into the mix. I completely disagree, it almost ruins the entire movie, and you can't help but laugh by how idiotic the whole sequence is. I was close to just turning the movie off at that moment. I also wasn't too fond off the scenes with Giulio and his mother. She seemed rather stereotypical as your basic over protecting mother. It needed to go.

I'm also not a fan of the ending. Some of it was predictable and some was just incoherent. I really can't explain much more as it will ruin the movie if you plan on seeing it. Let's just say that one move is unrealistic. That or the character is dumb and easily manipulated. Although I will say that Argento had something going with the rooftop sequence. It wasn't great or gripping or anything. But it was rather enjoyable, something that has been missing throughout the entire movie.

"Do You Like Hitchcock?" is not a complete waste of time. I did keep me interested sometimes, but for the rest of the time I was pretty bored. You'll be treated to some suspenseful moments, some comedic moments and some boring moments. I just simply could not get into this one. It's full of unnecessary scenes, stupid dialogue, stupid situations, and poorly executed sequences.

4/10.

OK...OK...so Dario Argento is pretty much my favorite horror director alive. That said, I will concur with the above review of "Do You Like Hitchcock?", which I consider to be the worst film of his entire career. The title sounded so interesting when it was first released and I remember being devastated by the outcome of the picture. This was a real slip for a master horror director. 3/10.
