Mysterious Wakanda lies in the darkest heart of Africa, unknown to most of the world. An isolated land hidden behind closed borders, fiercely protected by its young king - the Black Panther. But when brutal alien invaders attack, the threat leaves the Black Panther with no option but to go against the sacred decrees of his people and ask for help from outsiders. --TMDb

Marvel's animated Ultimate Avengers was more of an introductory affair, and now that the stage has been set, I was looking forward to the team mixing it up with the Chitauri army. While that's not quite what I got, it's still a solid entry.

Following the Chitauri's defeat, the Avengers have all gone their separate ways. Captain America still works for S.H.I.E.L.D. In fact, he's working just a little too hard; you see, he's taking all of that frustration at losing everything he's ever loved and channeling it into his missions to the point that Black Widow and Fury are beginning to worry about him. Meanwhile, in the small, tribal African nation of Wakanda, Prince T'Challa has returned from his studies. While any dealings with the outside world is all but forbidden by the nation's elders, King T'Chaka realizes that the future king would need such knowledge. Now a young man, T'Challa returns to find his nation at war with the Chitauri, who are being led by Herr Kleiser, a shapeshifting alien who Captain America was well acquainted with back in the 40's. After Kleiser strikes the king down, T'Challa assumes not only his throne, but the mantle of the Black Panther, the masked protector of Wakanda. Needing answers to save his nation, he turns to the only man who's walked away from a fight with the alien.

You know, at some point, this isn't even an Avengers movie. Rather, as I'm sure you've deduced, the primary focus of the film is more on Black Panther than the titular team. He doesn't even truly join the Avengers, just fights along side them. From a story perspective, this wasn't a problem at all. With just one new character to introduce, a little more time was given to Black Panther than the collective received last time. A man caught between protecting his country and upholding its traditions, T'Challa is complex enough to carry the movie just fine. Plus, we were able to dig a little deeper into the Pym's marriage and Captain America's psyche. Not bad bonuses. Although, they have to do something with Fury. Man sounded like a father in a 50's sitcom.

Again, while I was hoping for a massive army of aliens, Herr Kleiser is still a menacing villain. He can shapeshift into any body he wants to, assimilate the weapons of fallen warriors into his arsenal, is pretty much indestructible and his true Chitauri form (if it is his actual form that is) is an absolute horror to behold. And to really drive the evil home, he's a fucking Nazi. Plus, he still has a nice sized Chitauri at his command. I'd like to see him in the live action films, maybe the upcoming Captain America sequel.

I'll admit I had some misgivings about this sequel, but it's right on par with the first offering. After this they kicked out a sequel about the heroes' kids, but I'd like to see them make a proper Ultimate Avengers 3. Here's hoping. 8/10.
