The murderous fisherman with a hook is back to once again stalk the two surviving teens, Julie and Ray, who had left him for dead, as well as cause even more murder and mayhem, this time at a posh island resort. --IMDb

After the wildly successful, and effective, Scream hit theaters, the slasher genre enjoyed a sudden boost in the late nineties. This particular series, which might very well be considered the era's runner up, never came close to the quality of Scream.

It's been a year since Ben Willis' vengeful rampage, and Julie is just trying to live a normal life at college, but she's assaulted by nightmares and is completely unable to return to her home town, which has created a serious rift between her and ex-boyfriend Ray. Her roommate, Karla, has picked up on this and has been trying to talk her into dating her "good friend" Will, to no avail. Fortunately for the lovestruck Will, Karla has just won a trip for four to the Bahamas, and while Julie has obviously asked Ray, he's been delayed by a man in a familiar black raincoat. Back in the Bahamas, our hapless group is preparing for some fun in the sun, but are told upon arrival that they've gotten there just in time for storm season, and their stay is basically going to be one big hurricane. Naturally, the storm is the least of the worries, as our hook-loving pal is also on the island, making quick work of the skeleton staff, working his way back to Julie and her friends.

There's not a whole lot to see here; what little enjoyment I got out of it was based on my extreme love of slashers in general. The first film played up more of a stalking angle which worked rather well, but here the focus is on the kills themselves. The problem lies in that the kills are just not that good. How many ways can you murder someone with a hook? The resulting repetition combined with those last-second cut-aways strips every bit of fun out of the ordeal. Now factor in that the two newcomers to the franchise, Karla and Tyrell, are both aggravating as shit, and you can see that there just isn't a whole lot going for this flick. Sure, pacing isn't a problem, but the film moves along at a decent speed towards no real destination. I guessed the "twist killer" less than halfway into the picture, and his motivation was lazy and uninspired. This franchise never really could get the secret identity theme down pat.

Things are just as lackluster on the acting side of things. Returning stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. get the job done without any collateral damage, as does newcomer Matthew Settle. Also bonus points for Hewitt rocking her smoking hot body in a bikini, even if it is only for five minutes. Pop star Brandy's performance as Karla was also decent enough, but the character was annoying as fuck. Almost as annoying as her boyfriend Tyrell, who got the double whammy of a horrible script and equally horrible job by Mekhi Phifer. And finally, Jack Black accomplished nothing in his small bit part except getting on my nerves, but being that's what he does on a regular basis anyway, no surprises.

After an average but enjoyable first outing, this sequel downshifts to average but meh. Other than that short bikini scene, I can't think of any real reason you should hunt this down. 4.5/10
