Avengers: Age Of Ultron
|
|
I had a few issues with the movie, but it was
great nonetheless. Probably about an 8/10 for me.
One thing that bugs me about both
Avengers movies (and other movies that do this) is
the use of mind control. It's kind of a cop-out
plot device to make good characters do bad things
without any reason (for that character, not the
villain) or emotional arc. Granted, the run time
of each movie was already crammed full of plot and
couldn't stand much more being inserted, but mind
control always feels cheap to me. Also, no
character who has been mind controlled should be
trusted after that (especially with no telepath on
the team), regardless of Black Widow's magic
ability to shock people back to normalcy.

Korn: Live
|
|
My one Korn story involves a high school trip to
an amusement park. A bunch of kids got onto a
ride consisting of a bunch of seats that would
spin around a central bar while the whole bar spun
in an even larger circle. Before the
"technician" started up the ride, he ran
out in front of us and shouted, "Do you guys
like Korn?!" We all shouted,
"Yeah!" and he promised to spin us extra
long. After we stopped spinning, he walks over to
one girl on the ride who had vomited all over
herself and said "Dude, what happened to your
shirt." He then, without letting the girl
off of the ride, shouted, "Another time
around for the Korn fans! Whoooo!" and spun
us again.

Men In Black II
|
|
I found this movie excessively bland and
unmemorable. There is so much poorly written
dialogue...
5-6/10
|
Amazon Warrior
|
|
This sounds ten times better than another movie I
once watched. I think it was called: the Piranha
Women of the Avocado Jungle of Death...such a
terrible movie. They read out the full title
every time they needed to reference the women.
The name of the movie must have been said two
hundred times in under an hour.
|
Home Alone
|
|
Definitely a classic. The number of amazing
secondary characters in this film could easily
spread across a dozen lesser films. 9/10
|
True Grit
|
|
Just saw this tonight. The ending was a tiny bit
lacking, but the dialogue was top notch (as were
nearly all of the actors).
8.5/10

This movie is quite similar to the most recent
Death Race movie. The concept is better, but the
execution is a bit worse. 8/10
|
Poltergeist II: The Other Side
|
|
The only good scene was when a ghost possessed the
braces of the young boy.
Didn't even
check that P2 had been reviewed when I posted a
mini-review of P3 (much better than #2).
|
Lost: Season 6
|
|
I have to disagree strongly. I thought that the
last season felt mostly like filler, and the
ending...well you can't spend six years building
up to something and not have it be a let down. In
my opinion, the ending created more questions than
it answered. 6/10
|
A Scanner Darkly
|
|
I wasn't a fan of this one. Every scene left me
wondering when anything was going to get tied
together. Most loose ends got tied off in the
last 5-10 minutes, but the rest of the plot felt
like an amorphous blob.
5/10

A Test Of Wills
|
|
Finally the Bruce Willis biography has made it to
the big screen.
|
Monster House
|
|
It's been awhile, but I definitely liked this
movie. Somewhere around a 7-8 / 10 sounds right.
|
Yojimbo
|
|
This is a TMNT spin-off? Sweet. I'm on it.
|
Signs
|
|
My main problem was that the plot beats you over
the head with details that are obviously
foreshadowing future events. It was almost as
blatant as whichever Jurassic Park movie had the
girl whine about being kicked off the gymnastics
team just to set up her defeating raptors using
gymnastic flip-attack #7.
|
District 9
|
|
How many movies have you seen in the last year
that are better than a 9/10?
|
Inglourious Basterds
|
|
This was the best Tarantino movie I've seen...but
he never really agrees with me to the fullest.
8/10.
|
Dexter: Season 4
|
|
I'm still working my way through this season, but
it started out painfully for me. The baby seemed
to almost suck the life out of the show and Rita
became annoying as hell...but I'll finish based on
your glowing recommendation.

Zombieland
|
|
Not perfect, but darn enjoyable. 7.5-8/10
|
Orlok The Vampire
|
|
I'm not sure why the cover/back of the case have
those green-tinted scenes. Everything in the
movie is black-and-white plus a red/blue tint for
the 3D scenes.
|
Twilight
|
|
I found this movie absolutely horrendous. None of
the characters really showed any growth or change
from the beginning to the end of the movie. This
was largely because the characters start out with
their "destination" personality and only
get depth, if the screen/original writer was
feeling lucky, by figuring out why they feel like
they do. Five-ten minutes into the movie, the
male and female leads see each other and are
instantaneously in love. They don't fall in love
or become impressed by each other in any way;
their love simply is. This leads to some dialogue
so abysmal Lucas couldn't have written it if he
had tried. Really, I found the Anakin/Padme love
story much more convincing that Twilight's
Edward/Bella.
6.5 out of 10. Add 1
point if you're female and 1 point if you're
13/30-40 years old.

Reservoir Dogs
|
|
Either you like this kind of movie, or you don't.
It was definitely well done, so, if you've liked
any thing else by Quentin, you'll love this. It
wasn't for me though. 7/10
|
Dance Of The Dead
|
|
Great movie. A nice and light piece of cinema
with great gore and a high body count. 9/10
|
Trick 'R Treat
|
|
Nirrad about summed up my feelings. It was a
beautifully shot movie but I can't give it more
than an 8. It really felt like some events were
going to be tied together more neatly, but that
they weren't kinda let me down. I think the movie
is great, and I'll definitely watch it again, but
it's not a 10/10 by any means.
|
The Big Lebowski
|
|
I found this decent enough, but it never really
rose above "decent" for me. 7.5/10
|
True Blood: Season 2
|
|
I often thought the plot was a bit weak (maybe due
to how the whole season only covered the events of
a few days), but it's a testament to how well the
characters are written that I still loved this
show.
|
The Amityville Horror
|
|
I've only seen one movie that's worth less than a
4/10 and that movie is in Chad's possession now, I
believe. I've never seen the original AH. Is it
worth picking up?
|
The Amityville Horror
|
|
Wow, this has to be one of the worst movies I've
ever seen. Nothing scary and only a few scenes
that even came close to creepy. I'm tempted to
snap the disc in half and report it to Netflix as
"broken". 4/10
|
True Blood: Season 2
|
|
I thought the church story arc was decent enough,
but I couldn't really stand Maryann. After the
first time or two you see her, you know how every
scene she's in is going to go. I definitely
enjoyed the season, but I can't really give it
more than a 7.5-8 out of 10.
|
Lost: Season 1
|
|
Alright, just finished season 1. The maximum it
gets is an 8/10 but it could very well be down to
a 7/10. It's a great show, but it spends so much
time in flashbacks that I feel the present gets
cheated. Flashbacks always seem like a poor
storytelling device to me. They definitely have
their use (and on occasion are amazing), but I get
the feeling that the characters aren't growing
before me when they're in the past. The past is
already done, but the present is where they can
rise to heroism or find depravity and truely
become a monster.
It's much harder
to have surprises when you've already shown the
relative future. Either the viewer can guess the
ultimate outcome from the snippet you've shown or
the viewer was given a misleading view just to
screw with them.
8/10 if I'm generous
|
Lost: Season 1
|
|
I'm only a few episodes in, so I'll reserve final
judgment until I finish. From what I've seen so
far, though, it's an enjoyable show with not a
whole lot going on. It has the whole "Star
Trek: Voyager" problem: if they get off the
island, the show is done; if they never do, the
plot isn't going anywhere.
As one
of my friend said awhile back, "How good Lost
is will depend on the final episode. Only if it
ends well will Lost be remembered
fondly."
I hope for the best.

The Hills Have Eyes
|
|
Maybe I'm just not well-versed enough in this
genre to appreciate this kind of a movie, but it
really didn't do that much for me. There was a
decent amount of tension, but it was never that
scary. I was glad that they refrained from too
many LOUD SUDDEN NOISE scares, though.
I liked it well enough and would consider
watching it again. 7/10.
|
Burn After Reading
|
|
I'm just not a fan of Pitt's acting when he's
given a "dumb" character as he was in
this movie or with his Friends cameo (though the
dialogue he was given on Friends was pretty
terrible from the start). Pitt seems to do better
when he's allowed to act "cool", at
least in my opinion.
|
True Blood: Season 1
|
|
I have seen better, but this is one of a small set
of shows that are pretty solid. I'd recommend it,
and 8/10 sounds dead on.
|
Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
|
|
I found this installment to be rather lacking. It
really did feel like a Cliff Notes version of the
book, and I probably would have been horribly
confused in parts if I had seen this before
reading its basis. What bugged me the most was
that foreshadowing was kept to a minimum: a
seemingly random event would occur and would only
become relevant for thirty seconds later on. Many
of the scenes felt like disjointed snippets of a
larger story that had nothing to do with the
snippets placed before and after them.
The visuals, however, were quite stunning. Like
all the Harry Potter movies, the Order of the
Phoenix is beautiful and filled with enough small
details in the background that multiple viewings
would not be wasted.
It was a good
movie, but I'd recommend the book much more. It
deserves a 7 or 7.5 out of 10.

Dexter: Season 2
|
|
Everything that was wrong with this season could
have been fixed by liberal application of pie.
|
Superman / Doomsday
|
|
Caught another great episode of Justice League
Unlimited the other night. It had everything:
time travel, super heroes, robots, cowboys, robot
cowboys, dinosaurs, robot dinosaurs...everything
and a few good quotes too:
Wonder
Woman after blocking bullets from a old West Colt
pistol: "Those are the biggest, slowest
bullets I've ever seen."
Card
player #1: "I call--four kings and an
ace."
Card player #2: "That's a
might bit perplexing seeing as I have four aces
and a king. I suppose I win."
|
The Fifth Element
|
|
Could've sworn this had been reviewed
already...
I didn't really find this
movie to be so much shallow as superficial (I
swear there's a distinction). The acting veered
into parody range on occasion, but I think that's
what the movie was going for. It is what it set
out to be.
I enjoyed this a good
amount. I'm never quite sure what score to give
something, but I think this deserves at least an
8/10.

Transformers
|
|
I remember when I was a kid, my grandmother would
read me some of those little Transformer books.
She couldn't pronounce "Decepticons", so
she would say "Deceptions."
|
Resident Evil: Extinction
|
|
I flipped onto one of the Resident Evil movies and
saw a soldier get trapped in a room of moving
lasers. When I saw the lasers split (halfway
through their arc) into a net, I turned it off and
felt better for it.

Anyone else think this movie poster looks very
similar to Serenity's?
|
Superman / Doomsday
|
|
Just saw an episode of Justice League Unlimited
with Doomsday in it...it was abysmal. Not only
was Doomsday a Superman clone, but Doomsday
talked...which completely sucked the cool straight
out of him.
|
Superman / Doomsday
|
|
Any one ever read the Superman comic called
something like "For the Man Who Has
Everything"? It was a great story where
Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman visit Superman at
his Fortress of Solitude only to find Superman
enveloped in a parasitic plant that gave its
victims their heart's desire in dream form. The
comic was great, and the Justice League cartoon
did a fairly good adaption of it.
|
Superman / Doomsday
|
|
I understand; there are some characters I just
hate as well. I usually find Batman and Wolverine
to be off-putting as I think they're given way too
much credit and leeway in stories. There are only
so many times Wolverine can act like a distant
loner before I lose interest.
Batman, on the other hand, usually feels like a
plot device more than an actual character. Any
time a difficult situation arises, Batman breezes
by impossible obstacles with some miraculous
plan/device that could only have been
constructed/brought due to prior knowledge.
Superman has a limited arsenal, but Batman has no
limits. I'd rather read about a constrained god
than an omnipotent mortal.
