01. True Blood: Season 1 (2008)
The first 4-5 books are great, but they quickly start to go downhill from there. The show, on the other hand, has been amazing throughout.
02. Conan The Barbarian (1982)
I read the entire collection of Conan stories, and while the movie was not based on any particular story (just the character and universe), it definitely did it justice.
03. Dexter: Season 1 (2006)
With the exception of Dexter's brief journey into the supernatural in one of the books, the written version of Dexter has been pretty good. The show, however, is fantastic.
04. The Mist (2007)
The original short story is great, and the movie is even better. I did like the book's ending better, though.
05. Creepshow 2 (1987)
"The Raft" was originally a short story. Both the written and the film versions were decent, though the written one was a hair better.
06. 1408 (2007)
Again, both versions are amazing.
07. Riding The Bullet (2004)
Both are pretty good.
08. Graveyard Shift (1990)
The short story was alright, and the movie wasn't much worse.
09. The Mangler (1995)
The short story was pretty goofy, while the movie was just awful.
10. Cat's Eye (1985)
Both stories in this movie are based on short stories, and while they were both alright, neither holds a candle to the source material.
11. Children Of The Corn (1984)
Again, the short story was alright, but the movie was terrible.
12. Dolan's Cadillac (2009)
Fantastic book, average movie.
13. Quicksilver Highway (1997)
Maybe it's just me: both stories suck, both movie adaptations suck.
14. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Amazing movie, and the story is even better.
15. Apt Pupil (1998)
Average enough story, below average movie.
16. Stand By Me (1986)
Both versions are amazing.
17. The Green Mile (1999)
Amazing movie, and the story is even better.
18. The Langoliers (1995)
The original novella is great, but the TV adaptation... not even close.
19. Secret Window (2004)
Great book, decent adaptation.
20. The Walking Dead: Season 1 (2010)
Huge amount of love for both the comics and the television adaptation.
21. Silver Bullet (1985)
Enjoyed the book, and the movie was fun as hell.
22. Sleepy Hollow (1999)
I absolutely despised the original book, but this movie adaptation was pretty good.
23. Cujo (1983)
Good adaptation, but the book was better in every way.
24. Book Of Blood (2009)
Decent adaptation, but the book was better in every way.
25. The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
Amazing movie, and the story is even better.
26. Dread (2009)
Amazing story, but the movie is disappointing.
27. Rawhead Rex (1986)
I loved the movie, but I have to admit that the story is even better.
28. Candyman (1992)
This is one of those rare cases where I think that the movie was better than the book. The book wasn't bad, but the movie was so much better.
29. It (1990)
The book was an epic masterpiece. The adaptation was average at best.
30. Hellraiser (1987)
Great movie, great book.
31. Pet Sematary (1989)
Amazing book, mediocre movie.
32. Thinner (1996)
Decent book, decent movie.
33. Needful Things (1993)
The book was pretty damned good, but the movie was pretty weak.
34. First Blood (1982)
I actually liked the book a lot more than the movie, and I loved the movie. The book isn't as cut and dry about who the hero is and who the villain is, which makes for better storytelling.
35. Jaws (1975)
Yet another example of "enjoyed the book more than the movie."
36. Lurking Fear (1994)
Great book, mediocre movie.
37. Re-Animator (1985)
The book has its moments, but overall, the movie is much more enjoyable.
38. Dreams In The Witch-House (2005)
The movie was better, definitely. The book was much more detailed and that worked in its favor, but at the same time, it was just too long and too padded. Needed to be condensed down a bit.
39. The Dead Zone (1983)
I really enjoyed the book, but this adaptation was a small step up from awful. The problem is that they wanted to keep everything from the book in the movie, but they didn't have time to devote to all of it... so they jumped from scene to scene at a frantic pace.
40. Phantoms (1998)
Great adaptation. The book expanded upon a lot of the things from the movie, but still, both are great sources of entertainment.
41. The Call Of Cthulhu (2005)
Very faithful adaptation, but the book wins - hands down.
