Visions of Johanna (Delta Center, Salt Lake City, UT 2/21/95)
|
|
Ain't it just like the night to play tricks
When you're trying to be so quiet
The city is stranded, but we're all doing our best to get right
And Louise holds a handful of rain, tempting you to deny it
Lights lit from the opposite loft
Country music station plays soft
There's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
But these visions of Johanna have conquered my mind
The empty lot where the ladies play
Blindman's bluff with their keychains
And the all-night girls, they whorе out on the D train
You can hear the night watchman flick his flashlight
And ask himself if it's him or thеm that's insane
Louise, she's alright, she's just here
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
She makes it all too concise and too clear that Johanna's not here
The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face
But these visions of Johanna have now taken my place
Little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
And bringing her name up, he speaks of her farewells just to me
He's sure got a lot of gall to be so useless at all
Muttering small talk in the hall while I'm in the hall
I cannot explain, it's so hard to get off
But these visions of Johanna kept me up past the dawn
Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo, this is the once
Salvation must be lightning after a while
But Mona Lisa must have had those highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
The primitive wallflower freeze
The jelly feet with all sleeves
The one with the mustache says, "Geez, I can't find my keys"
Pools of binoculars, they provide every view
Visions of Joanna, they get all she needs to prove
The peddler now speaks to the callouses pretending to care for him
"Give me someone that's not a parasite
And I'll go out and say a prayer for him"
Like Louise always says, you can't look at much
Can you bear to see yourself compared to him?
The Madonna, she still has not shown
You see this empty cage now full
The cape of the stage was a no-no
The fiddler now steps through the hole
He writes, "Everything's been returned what you stole"
On the back of the fridge truck that moans
While my conscience explodes
Oh, the harmonicas play, the skeleton keys in the rain
These visions of Joanna are now all that remain
These visions of Joanna are now all that remain
