Connections: Video Violence

Howard and Eli, the killers from the first Video Violence movie, are back and are now hosting their own TV show. Broadcast secretly from their basement, the show looks a the fine art of murder, letting other aspiring psychos send in videos of their handiwork for the world to enjoy. Some viewers are shocked and horrified, but many more become avid fans, clamoring for more and more blood. --IMDb

During an interview with the director, a segment which is found in the bonus features section of the DVD release, it is said that this sequel was created with a budget of just $28. I watched this before sitting through the actual movie, and at the time, I assumed that that statement was sarcasm; I mean, could you even buy the required amount of blank VHS tapes for your camcorder at that price during the eighties? However, after watching the movie, I really have to wonder just how true that statement really was. Yes, this is another one of those low-budget, sleazy slasher flicks from the glorious eighties, but was it any good? Well, let's see...

Howard (Bart Sumner) and Eli (Uke), the two main killers from the previous entry in the series, return as the hosts for a show which could be considered America's Funniest Bloodiest Home Videos." They've somehow managed to hack into television stations around the country so that their show is broadcast live on a weekly basis, much to the delight of some of the more demented viewers. The two play snuff movies for the home audience, they bring out "guests" who wind up on the wrong end of sharp instruments, and they even show home videos that the viewers send in. These particular home movies aren't something as tame as a five-year-old kicking his dad in the balls or a dog shitting on the carpet; no sir, these videos are filled with nothing but straight-up violence, and the same could probably be said about Video Violence 2 as a whole.

Whereas the first entry in the series mixed together a decent storyline, a small serving of black comedy, and a couple of neat kills, this one features... well, a lot of black comedy and a bunch of neat kills. Indeed, there's not a whole lot of plot to be found here (the whole television "hacking" thing is just an excuse to start the movie and the female guest is only there to bleed and show off her boobs), but that's not to say that it isn't enjoyable. In fact, since part of the charm of these eighties horror flicks is the violence and titillation, the lack of a storyline actually does the viewer a favor: there's no need to sit through poorly-written trash in order to get to "the good stuff", if you know what I mean (and I think you do).

Alright, so what if it's extremely low-budget, and who cares if the effects are laughable in spots: that does nothing to take away from the charm of a title that gives the audience exactly what they want to see and nothing else. Where else can you see a commercial for a doll that will kill your kids for you or watch as a prop breaks and the actors improvise while joking about it? The movie has charm, and that goes a long way in the entertainment department. Viewers looking for a serious, scary horror film should look elsewhere, but fans of camp will probably eat this up as much as I did.

If you're a fan of the eighties slashers, do yourself a favor: pick up a copy of the Video Violence / Video Violence 2 double-feature DVD. The films contained within are campy as hell, but I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy every moment of them. 7/10.

I just won the Video Violence double feature DVD on e-bay for $7.99 with free shipping! That's a good deal for two cheesy fun movies.
