The story is set in 1933 on board an Japanese express train from Shimonoseki to Tokyo. Suguro Takeru, a Japanese detective who is eccentric just like Poirot and complete with moustache, manages to wrangle a berth on the sleeper. The train is stuck in an avalanche and then a murder is committed during the night. Suguro is tasked to investigate.
