Connections: The Mummy

An Egyptian high priest travels to America to reclaim the bodies of ancient Egyptian princess Ananka and her living guardian mummy Kharis. Learning that Ananka's spirit has been reincarnated into another body, he kidnaps a young woman of Egyptian descent with a mysterious resemblance to the princess. However, the high priest's greedy desires cause him to lose control of the mummy. --IMDb

Two years after the The Mummy's Tomb stunk up theaters with its utter inanity, Universal decided to add another chapter to the story.

In the short time since Kharis rampaged after the Bannings looking for revenge, the story has swept the nation. As can be expected, it's been met with a considerable amount of skepticism. One such skeptic is Tom Hervey, a college student who just so happens to be in Dr. Norman's class. If you'll remember, Dr. Norman was the expert the police called in to study the mysterious dust on Kharis' victims' necks and he assures his pupils that the tale is, in fact, very true. Tom isn't quite convinced, so he strikes up a conversation with his girlfriend, an Egyptian woman named Amina. She's extremely resistant to talk about her mother land; the very thought of it makes her anxious. Turns out there's a very real reason to be nervous, as Andoheb has appointed a new priest to retrieve Kharis (who's survived the last movie's inferno) using tana fluid as bait. Unfortunately, Dr. Norman has also been experimenting with the leaves, drawing Kharis' fury right to him. In turn, the mummy's presence is drawing Amina.

The Mummy's Ghost has the same hour-long running time as the last sequels, but at least it uses that time to actually tell the story. Sure, they cut a few corners, here and there. For example, they didn't have any explanation for Kharis surviving the fire; he's just been wandering around. They're all minor things however, and the main story around Amina is fleshed out well enough to carry the film. Plus it boasts a solid noir ending well before its time. That's not to say it doesn't have its problems, the most unforgivable of which is that they peddled out the exact same twist as the last movie to set up the climax. It was dumb the first time, and flat-out repeating it was worse.

While the story centers around Amina, much more focus is put on Tom. Robert Lowery handled the role easily enough, and I wouldn't have any complaints if he returns for the next sequel. Even if he is incapable of saying his dog's name, Peanuts, without sounding like he's saying 'penis'. Now, Amina was originally supposed to be played by Acquanetta, but she concussed herself early on and was replaced by Ramsay Ames. I don't know the first thing about Acquanetta, but she had to have been better than Ames. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the recasting was the reason for Amina's short run time. Finally, every problem I had with Lon Chaney's portrayal of Kharis carries over to this film as well. If anything, he looks even worse.

The Mummy's Ghost certainly fared better than the last sequel, but it's still nothing worth hunting down. 6.5/10.
