The products at Shopwell's Grocery Store are made to believe a code that helps them live happy lives until it's time for them to leave the comfort of the supermarket and head for the great beyond. However, after a botched trip to the great beyond leaves one sausage named Frank and his companion Bun stranded, Frank goes to great lengths (pun intended) to return to his package and make another trip to the great beyond. But as Frank's journey takes him from one end of the supermarket to the other, Frank's quest to discover the truth about his existence as a sausage turns incredibly dark. Can he expose the truth to the rest of the supermarket and get his fellow products to rebel against their human masters? --IMDb

While there's been adult cartoons released before, the last decade has seen an explosion in the genre. Never one to shy away from controversial, juvenile humor, Seth Rogen has taken it upon himself to push the envelope like never before.

Every morning, the groceries of Shopwell's supermarket get up bright and early and look forward to be chosen by the Gods. The Gods will take them to The Great Beyond, a paradise where their wildest dreams can come true. For hot dog Frank, that means finally "getting inside" his girlfriend, Brenda the hot dog bun. The two have been separated by their packaging, but with the Fourth of July just one day away, their inevitably going to be chosen soon. Sure enough, they're soon sharing a shopping cart together, excited for their future. Unfortunately, also in their cart is a jar of honey mustard who's been chosen before and returned to the store. Knowing full well what kind of horrors befalls food in a kitchen, he's not about to go back without a fight and kills himself by jumping out of the cart. Trying to save his life, Frank and Brenda both leave their packages, and when their God runs the cart into another, both dog and bun are thrown to the supermarket floor and left behind. Amongst the carnage is a Jewish bagel and a Middle Eastern lavash. Together the foursome have to make it back to their aisles so they can be chosen the following day, but Frank just can't get Honey Mustard's ranting and raving out of his head. Making matters even worse is a Douche who had his nozzle bent and lost his chance to get inside the hot MILF who had picked him up. He fully blames the hot dog for this, and vows revenge.

So let's just get this out of the way: Sausage Party offers comedy catered solely to the lowest common denominator. I'd say a good 75% of the comedy are sex jokes; specifically as vulgar as you can get. There is truly not a drop of subtlety in the whole project. Along the way, there's plenty of ethnic humor thrown in there as our hapless group head from section to section. This too has all the finesse of a sledgehammer. Even the bagel and the lavash don't actually factor into the team in any meaningful way; they're just there to add some jokes around being forced to share an aisle (a play on their war over the Gaza Strip and West Bank) as well as a few one-off jokes. My favorite of which was the bagel complaining that the sauerkraut forced them to move out of their homes, originally trying to move them to the barbecue section. Filling in the cracks were the morbid violence against the groceries and food puns. Lots and lots of food puns. Most of them are centered on Douche; hell, with his Jersey Shore Guido mannerisms, he's a walking pun himself. The sheer extremes they took this irreverence had me laughing out loud more than once, but I'm not entirely sure how well it hold up on repeat viewings. Such is the nature of shock humor.

Along with all the juvenile humor, there's an undeniable, ham-fisted atheist theme running throughout the movie. Seth Rogen attacks religion on every front he can think of: the nature of blind faith, a strict adherence to behavioral rules, various branches condemning others for their "weird beliefs." It's handled with the same lack of subtlety that defined its humor, and the two just do not mesh together well. After all, its hard to seriously consider any points raised on religion in a movie that has a lesbian taco or a used condom traumatized by its use.

In the role of our main heroes, Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig held things down nicely. Frank is basically every role Rogan has ever played without the lazy underachiever trait, but he does it well. While I'm not too familiar with Wiig's work, the sass she brought to Brenda had a huge smile on my face. The character isn't there just to be Frank's main squeeze, and she was more than up to the challenge of shouldering her half of the load. Between this and the no-bullshit character she played in The Martian, I might have to look into her backlog. Also, Michael Cera also might have finally provided a role that didn't aggravate the shit out of me. It's an overall arch that could plausibly play out in a live-action film, so hopefully he uses it as a spring board to bigger things in the future. I swear I'm going to punch something if I have to watch him awkwardly lose his virginity to a good-looking, quirky, sarcastic girl one more time. As an added bonus we have names like Ed Norton, Salma Hayek, James Franco and Paul Rudd in smaller roles. Not a bad roll call, if you'll pardon the pun.

You're already going to know what you think of Sausage Party the very first time you see that trailer. If ninety minutes of extreme violence, food puns, race jokes, and sexual references sound like your idea of a good time, go for it. On the other hand, if you think those things stopped being funny around the age of thirteen, stay away. Personally, I'll throw it a high six/low seven.
