A group of crooked cops, malevolent gangsters and a horde of walking dead are the center point of this gruesome, action-packed, tale of retribution and escape. Penned in like animals, on the top floor of a deserted high-rise, these two opposing gangs find they're not alone in the lair of bloodthirsty zombies stalking the corridors of death. Joining forces to survive, they must reach the ground level together or perish. Loaded with a bad ass attitude, guns, axes and extremely creative hand-to-hand combat need to survive, being caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time. --IMDb

From IFC and distributed by Momentum Pictures comes "The Horde" A french zombie movie with Bite.....heheh.

The french are noted for their recent triumphs with gutsy horror flicks and this twist on the zombie genre is no different. Here we get what starts out as a cop movie, with a few of them out for revenge for a fallen colleague. Things don't go quite as planned though and they are suddenly on the defensive end of the cop killer gangs wrath. This appears and disappears very suddenly as we see the sky start lighting up from firefights, grenades and bombs as we all find out at the same time that there is a zombie invasion going on in the city.

This puts quite a crimp in both of the groups plans as they now have to join together as unwilling partners to fight off this onslaught of zombie terror. They are joined by an old man who claims to know a way out of the building and is a pretty tough character himself, at different times toting a pick axe and a WW2 machine gun. The ending is not to be revealed here, however someone does live to see the sun shine again.

This is a slightly different take on the zombie genre. And any freshness at all is a welcome relief. Some rules still apply though. The zombies must be shot in the head, once bitten you will turn into a zombie and separating the head from a zombie works as well. The differences are most notable in the story itself not centering on the zombies from the beginning, and as a matter of fact, no reason at all is ever given for the zombie invasion. The zombies are of the "running" variety and are very quick. Also, they are very bloody and that accounts for most of the make up effects....although the first zombie seen is quite disturbingly violent and he is huge. This could be a straight cop story except for the addition of the flesh eaters. As "Dog Soldiers" was described as a war movie that had werewolves in it, "The Horde" is a cop movie that has zombies in it.

The quality of the movie is quite good; shot 2.35:1. The colors vary from bright to muted depending on the scene. There are quite a few fast action sequences and sadly the camera does not linger on the gore for very long periods of time. You can watch this film in its native French language with optional English subtitles, or you have the option to watch it in a very good English dubbed version. Special features include a trailer for the movie, A making of feature, storyboard and deleted scenes.

Overall, this is a good addition to the zombie genre with enough differences to make it a keeper with good re-watch value. 7/10.

This is one of the best zombie flicks I've seen in a long time. Huge thumbs up, 9/10 - minus one point only because I disliked the ending.

This was a good one, very much so. Weird was how the characters, from one point, had serious dept and emotions. The drama is real and you can sorta relate to the characters, from an emotional point of view, all the way through the film. On the other hand they reminded me of David Warbeck's character in The Beyond, because like 'ol David, the thugs and coppers from La Horde never seem to realise for more than 20 seconds that shooting them through the head does the trick. They loose a lot of ammo on useless shots in the arms and gut, which makes them look kinda stupid and Bmovie-ish, and La Horde is not a Bmovie. But still. Last french zombi movie I saw was Revenge of the Living Dead Girls .... La Horde is way better, of course. Decent zombi movie, not very original, but I liked it very very much 8/10

Not much else I can add to what's already been said. Solid zombie movie with an ending that killed all of the progression. 7/10
