Egyptian caterer busies himself collecting body parts from young maidens in order to bring Ishtar, an ancient goddess of good and evil back to life. When he has prepared enough parts for the ceremony, he hypnotizes a woman giving an engagement party for her daughter, at which he plans to perform the ancient rites of summons, using the daughter as his final sacrifice. --IMDb

Fuad Ramses is an exotic foods caterer by day, and a serial killer by night. The movie picks up with him disposing of a number of ladies, and taking certain body parts from each; a leg from one lady, brains from another, the tongue of yet another, etc. He plans to whip up an Egyptian Feast with all of the parts, in an attempt to resurrect the Goddess Of Blood Ishtar. When a lady comes in and asks for something unique for a party she's throwing for her daughter Suzette, Fuad decides that this will be the event that he unveils his feast at.

Not much is done for the storyline in this one, as it was done by Herschell in an attempt to become "the most hated film-maker alive." Basically, the movie follows a formula: show the cops investigating the murders, show a murder, more cops, more kills. This film was shot in five days, using local amateur actors in the parts, but it seems to mainly be a showcase for Herschell's gore-creating talents. Since this is (supposedly) the first film to ever show gratuitous gore, and the first movie to show a female having her tongue ripped out, that was quite the task for ol' Herschell to undertake, but he did a damned good job with it. The gore used was way ahead of its time, as it would rival even the Fulci classics in quality and realism.

As I mentioned above, Herschell used amateur / first-time actors for this movie, since the budget was extremely small. This does show in the dialogue scenes, as everybody is pretty bad in their roles. Former Playboy Playmate Connie Mason plays Suzette, a young lady who is dating the main cop on the case, and the daughter of the lady who's getting Fuad to cater her event. Connie is continually screwing up her parts, and even has to have her lines written on the side of a couch in one scene as she kept forgetting them... and isn't too subtle about reading them off of said couch, either. Since she was cast in the main heroine role, you can just imagine how good the supporting cast was.

But honestly, you don't watch a film such as this for the award-winning acting, or the genius storylines. No sir, this is more about throwing as much gore and violence on the screen as possible, and attempting to truly disgust the viewer. That part of the movie experience is done up quite nicely, with the blood being neither too thin or too bright, but just right. I believe I've driven home the point about the quality being excellent, but the quantity isn't too shabby either. Eight total kills, including the aforementioned classic tongue-ripping scene, a leg being cut off, brains being removed, some stabbings, and even a good old-fashioned whipping-to-death scene.

Overall, worth the viewing if you're a fan of the gore movies, and would like to see the one that started it all. Herschell Gordon Lewis is considered to be the "Godfather Of Gore", and as far as this film is considered, at least, he definitely lives up to it. 7/10 would be my final opinion, but dock two points if you need a good storyline with your movie, and dock another five points if bad acting will ruin your viewing experience.

It was no TCM, but the creepy back-woods cannibal theme just never ceses to indulge my appetite for gore. I saw this for $2.99 on sale a Hollywood video, I'd heard alittle about it up 'til then, so obivously I bought it, watched it, and enjoyed it. Easily a 9/10.... this movie is a rare horror gem.

Finally got around to seeing this one. I actually really loved it. Oddly enough, it relaxed me. Maybe it's the look of the film, but I will definitely be watching this one again and again.

9/10
