What the fuck? That's a phrase I found myself uttering numerous times throughout the fifth season of Lost, and it's also a phrase that I found myself yelling when I saw the huge cliffhanger finale and realized that I would have to wait another four months to see where the story goes from there. Oh, sure: I know it'll all be resolved in the first ten minutes of the first episode of season six, but damn, having to wait to see exactly how it is resolved... well, that's akin to torture in my ever so humble opinion.
As for season five, I had heard numerous complaints that the show was a bit difficult to follow, and I had brushed those off as nonsensical drivel from the unwashed masses. However, now that I've seen the (as of this writing) latest season, I can definitely see where those concerns came from, especially when you stop to think that most people were watching this at the pace of but one episode a week. Still, I can't say that that hurt my enjoyment.
Standard disclaimer: I'm going to be spoiling the shit out of the first four seasons, so if you're reading this without having seen those seasons for some ungodly reason, you may want to stop now. Also, while I won't be presenting any major spoilers for the fifth season in this review, I will be discussing some of the events that lay the groundwork for this season; after all, it would be sort of hard to talk about the season at hand without pointing out where the story goes.
So, after that huge bombshell at the end of season four, we discover that Locke is dead... right? Well, sort of. This season deals heavily with the idea of time travel, and though it wasn't a ruse (yes, Locke is really, truly, dead), the man does play a huge part in this season nonetheless. You see, after they moved the island to escape Widmore's soldiers, they unleashed the magnetic fields contained in the core of the island. The result? The island's inhabitants are jumping back and forth through time every few hours, and they quickly discover that this isn't some Back to the Future deal: just because something hasn't happened in their past, that doesn't mean that it can't happen in the present-term past. For example, killing Hitler as a child would not have prevented him from growing up to murder thousands of innocent people as that had already happened... just, not in the timeline of the main characters. Make sense? Yeah, I thought so.
Meanwhile, Jack convinces the other members of the elite Oceanic Six to return to the island, and once there, the group discovers this timeline inconsistency first hand. How? Well, they don't arrive in the present time, they arrive back in 1977... and discover that Sawyer, Jin, and Juliette are working for the Dharma Initiative. Just to make things even more interesting, that plane that brought them back to the island? Yeah, it was also transporting Sun, Ben, and the body of John Locke... and that group landed in the present time. As if all of that wasn't enough, Locke is now back among the living thanks to a bit of island magic and some screwy timelines, and the end result is just downright bizarre.
Over the course of any given episode, we'll watch Sawyer, Juliette, and Jin go about their business in 1974 prior to Jack and the gang showing up on the island, we'll see the crew mingling together in 1977 while trying to figure out how to get back to their own time, and of course, we'll also see Locke and his buddies in the present time. We'll also watch as they bounce around even further back in time (want to see who was on the island back in the fifties?), and of course, there's the obligatory flashback sequences. Needless to say, this particular season requires a little more attention out of the viewer, and personally, I don't think I would have been able to keep up with every last detail if I watched just one episode per week. However, watching the entire season almost straight through makes it much more manageable.
As is the norm with the show, the storyline will keep you interested for the entire sixteen episodes that this season runs for. As is also the norm with the previous seasons, numerous secrets are revealed and countless mysteries are finally solved, but in keeping true to the spirit of the show, more questions are raised in every episode. How was Locke able to come back to life? Just who is Jacob? What about the smoke monster? Why does Richard never age? These questions and many more are answered, but just wait until you see what is brought up to keep the audience excited for season six. I won't say anything about it, but I will say that January can not come soon enough.
Really, there's not much more than can be said. If you've stuck with the show for this long, then yes, you will love this season just as much as the others, but if you didn't like the show in the first place... well, why would you pick up the fifth season? Personally, I thought that it ranked just a hair under the best that the show has offered thus far, but it's nice to see that the writers haven't run out of ideas yet. Let's hope that the (supposedly) final season wraps things up and takes this show out with a bang. 9/10.

I actually yelled at my screen after the finale
wrapped. Boy does that ever make a man feel silly.
Anyway, a great albeit confusing season. Some
pretty interesting developments, some questions
are answered, new ones are brought up. So what
really did happen to Claire? Why is Jack's father
somehow a main player on the island's spooky side?
These are just some of the questions that were
picking my brain for the entire season. I can only
hope they are answered in the final season. The
cliffhanger ending is just ridiculous. If that
won't make you watch the next season, nothing
will. I hate the winter, but I can't wait for
January to roll around.

I absolutely cannot wait until January, season 6
is going to be epic. I think many of these
questions you have Tristan are going to be
answered very quickly into the season.

So I just finished this season an hour or so ago.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK it needs to be
January. These past 3 or so weeks I've spent
watching Lost have been some of the best moments
I've ever experienced with a television show.
