Connections: My Bloody Valentine

Tom returns to his hometown on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine's night massacre that claimed the lives of 22 people. Instead of a homecoming, Tom finds himself suspected of committing the murders, and it seems like his old flame is the only one that believes he's innocent. --IMDb

Remakes come and remakes go. Sometimes they're good, and sometimes they blow. Most of you out there are totally against them, but some of them can be a true gem.

I really dislike January. It's cold, it's the beginning of a new semester and it's the time when companies dump their garbage movies. The only movie that I can remember actually enjoying in January was Rambo, but other than that it has been garbage. When I first heard about "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" I had no intentions in actually seeing the movie. But as time came closer to release, I was actually quite curious about how the 3-D looks, and I heard that it had a well deserved R rating. So I packed my bags, traveled 2 hours to visit my friends Gary and Dan, and to watch "My Bloody Valentine"............. in 3-D!

Local miner Harry Warden was having an average day of work when all of a sudden there was an explosion in the mine and everyone inside was trapped. With no rescue in sight, Harry resorts to cannibalism to stay alive. Unfortunately, he eventually goes insane from this traumatic situation. He is eventually rescued and taken to the hospital. During his stay, he is constantly haunted by the accident and flees the hospital on a murderous rampage. A local group of teenagers decide to have a friendly Valentines Day party at the mine. But little do they know that Harry has come back to the mine to kill everyone inside. Teens start getting slaughtered left and right and the only survivors are Axel (Kerr Smith), Sarah (Jaime King), Tom (Jensen Ackles) and Irene (Betsy Rue). 10 years past and the town is still trying to forget about the Valentines Day massacre. Everyone is grown up, and is trying to move on with their lives. Tom - who has been gone for 10 years- returns to town to sell the mine that his father once owned. But just when everything seemed to be normal, Harry returns to kill the survivors from 10 years ago and everyone else who crosses his path. It is up to Axel - who is now Sheriff- his wife Sarah, Tom and retired Sheriff Burke (Tom Atkins) to finally put an end to Harry's killing spree.

I'm not going to lie to you; the main reason why I watched this movie was for the 3-D effects. Since my local theater didn't have the 3-D technology, I traveled 2 hours in bad weather just to see it in 3-D. And honestly, I would have enjoyed the movie with or without the effects. "My Bloody Valentine" was the perfect way to start off the year with horror, in my opinion. This movie is a Slasher, and it knows it and doesn't try to be anything besides a Slasher.

The gore in this movie was surprisingly good. I expected a few kills to be violent, while the other would just be a little blood shed. I was wrong. Every kill in this movie was brutal, and you got to see every bit of it in all of its (3-D) glory. While it was quite obvious that some of the kills were CGI, its understandable considering this movie was made with 3-D in their minds. And don't expect just a handful of kills; this movie is loaded with them. Within the first 15 minutes roughly 15 people or more get slaughtered. Now that is simply awesome.

The 3-D effects for the most part were fine, but not as jaw dropping as I had hoped for. Sure there are a few great looking scenes like a pick axe through the back of the head, with the pick coming out of the face with the eye ball attached to it, and of course the final scene. But other than these and a few select moments, the awe from watching a 3-D movie wears off pretty quickly. Halfway through the movie I didn't even notice the 3-D effects anymore until it was used to its fullest. But again, it still had some great looking scenes.

If you are going in expecting great dialogue and acting, then you obviously don't have a clue about Slashers. The acting and dialogue here is simply terrible for the most part and downright hilarious at times. But that just adds to the magic of these types of films. It's not a Slasher unless it has cheesy dialogue and acting. So fans of the genre will have absolutely no problem in this department.

Was "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" a mind blowing experience? No. But it was damn entertaining and a great way to start off the New Year and one of the better remakes to come out. I haven't seen the entire original, but I wouldn't doubt it if this is one of those rare cases where the remake is better than the original. 3-D or 2-D, gives this movie a shot and you might just be impressed.

8/10.

Maybe it was just because I saw it in 2-D... but that's doubtful...

3.3/10

I really didn't like this that much, they could have definitely shaved off a good 10 minutes and made it less of a mine drama.. I saw it in 3D and loved the kills (especially the first one), but I caught myself checking my watch more than once. Coraline trailer was fun... 6.5/10

A bit disappointed with the DVD release. They used the old red/green lens style instead of the newer style with the sunglass looking glasses. Made everything blurry and kind of sepia toned. With that said, the movie itself was entertaining as hell. Great kills throughout and a chick running around stark naked for a good five minutes. Quality.

Decent enough movie, I think the 8/10 sounds about right. The MTV-style editing was really grating on my nerves, but there was a nice little eighties-throwback slasher wrapped up in here.

Starts off great, ends up terrible. Shame really. I ain't a big fan of remakes, but generally find them watchable if a tad pointless - they invariably pale in comparison to the original. One thing this had going for it was the original wasn't exactly a classic. There were some good characters and some lovely kills, but it just gets sillier as it goes on, and as Chad pointed out, the editing is irritating to say the least. About a 6, says I.

I bought this movie basically just to see a horror movie in 3D at home; the movie was well made, but the 3D effects-at least on my regular HD flatscreen and the red/blue glasses were pretty variable. Only seemed to work a couple times including when one of the victims was adjusting the TV and the antenna came out at the audience. Probably better in plain old 2D as the 3D does make a dark movie even darker.

This was awesome in theatres with the sunglass-style glasses, but yeah, the DVD is much better served in 2D.
