Anney, a poor single mother from the rural South, struggles to raise her young daughter Bone. They seem to find happiness when Anney marries a kind man named Lyle who treats Bone like his own child. But after Lyle is killed in a car accident, Anney marries hotheaded Glen, who abuses Bone physically and sexually and tears the once tightly-knot family apart.
