Denzel has always been a good actor in every movie I've seen him in, regardless of how well the movie does as a whole. I would rate him as a top ten actor in my book, mainly because of how he carries himself and how well he communicates his emotions through dialogue. In Déjà Vu, he plays a detective with a lot of experience and instinct who is thrown into a crazy ride of a movie.
The movie opens with a bang- a very bad pun, but truthful nonetheless. A ferry in New Orleans is filled with women, children, and men, some sailors, and as they float down the river a car filled with explosives goes off and destroys over 500 lives. As the smoke clears and emergency crews arrive, agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) arrives on the dock to get a briefing of the situation and to examine the surroundings more closely. He's recruited for this case by Paul Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) to take part in some special technology that allows for the FBI to see what happened four days previously through triangulation and camera systems in the area.
He is also asked to come in and examine a body that washed up on shore some minutes before the blast occurred; however, when he gets there he sees that she is burned in the same way other victims are and her fingers are missing on her right hand. The case becomes stranger when he had received a message from a woman who he had never spoken with before. Soon after he goes to the victim's house, throwing more confusion and mystery into an already vague situation. As the good agent tries to find the bomber of the ferry as well as the killer of the shore victim, he realizes this technology they are using is far more powerful.
Now that all happened in probably the first 35-40 minutes, so though the synopsis may have seemed long, it really was needed to get up to the major twists and craziness of this movie. The first half is a pretty straightforward cop drama; the second half, however, becomes more of a sci-fi/suspense flick, and for me that worked uber-well. I thought the fusion of the two parts were seamless and incredibly suspenseful, and though some may feel that the technology is far-fetched and unrealistic, I felt that the way it was written and directed made everything believable in its own right.
In terms of performances, no one slouched. Everyone from the man (Denzel) to the lesser-known actors (one from the Mighty Ducks you may recognize) were great and added to the quality of the movie. I was surprised that this movie isn't more widely known or publicized, I couldn't stop watching it despite how tired I was at the time. I haven't seen Val Kilmer for some time but he seems to still have acting talent; he was pretty good in his role.
If you're looking for a good movie with action, suspense and drama all wrapped up into one, you'll get it in this movie. The twists and turns taken within the movie, as well as the killer's motives, were very well-constructed. His motives were more of the psychotic patriotism type, but the only way you can find out what I mean is by watching. Another movie I could suggest with some cop drama and weird mystical crap with Denzel is Fallen, but that's for another review. Overall I cannot recommend this movie enough, it left me so mindboned and full of adrenaline. How often can you say that about a movie these days? 9/10.

This film was interesting, but I found it lack in
a few parts that I won't mention because it would
ruin the movie for others. It was still a good
movie and I've always liked Denzel Washington.
