A band of satanist hippies roll into a town and begin terrorizing the local folk. After raping a local girl, her grandpa goes after them, only to be beaten and forced to take LSD. His grandson then plots revenge on the satanists by feeding them meat pies infected with blood from a rabid dog. They turn into crazed lunatics and begin killing and/or infecting everything in their path. --TMDb

For those of us who are in love with schlocky exploitation films, Grindhouse Releasing has been a blessing. While they don't have as many titles in their catalogue as say, Shriek Show, they take great pride in releasing the best possible edition of the movie possible. What does this entail you might ask. We get an amazing transfer, commentaries, production stills, interviews, and anything else they're able to dig up from the film's past. That said, when Bob Murawski over at Grindhouse Releasing sent me a copy of I Drink Your Blood, I couldn't have been happier. I'd had my eye on it for some time, and to be sifting through your mail and find such a movie is quite a coincidence.

Our movie opens with a satanic group of hippies - The Sons and Daughters of Satan, to be more specific - performing a ritualistic sacrifice of a chicken, in the woods on the outskirts of a small town. Their ritual is interrupted however, when one of the members notices a young girl named Sylvia (Iris Brooks) watching from a distance. Not wanting their evil deeds being reported, they hunt her down and brutally beat and rape the poor girl. As she stumbles back into town the next morning, she is found by her much younger brother Pete (Riley Mills) who immediately fetches their grandfather, an old veterinarian who sets out for some revenge with the world's last remaining musket longest shotgun.

When he finally catches up with the group, led by the insane Horace Bones (Bhaskar Roy Chowdhury), they're holding up in an abandoned motel, doing LSD and chanting more of their Satan gibberish. The group of them easily overpower the elderly gent, and force him to take some LSD. After tripping balls and returning home, his young grandson Pete decides that he's had enough of this group terrorizing his family. He sets off into the woods with a shotgun where finds and kills a rabid dog. He returns home to scrounge up a few syringes and gloves, then proceeds to extract some of the rabies-infected blood from the dog. The next day he heads to the local bakery, where he laces some of the meat pies with the blood, and makes sure that the band of hippies gets the lot of them. You heard me right, he puts rabies blood into the meat pies, and feeds them to the hippies. As you can imagine, the hippies soon start to feel the effects of the disease, and after frothing up what looks like toothpaste after a quick brushing, they quickly overrun the town with only one thing in mind, human flesh.

I will admit that I had very low expectations for this one. With a title like I Drink Your Blood, can you really blame me? I expected the classic exploitation staples of sex, gore and carnage, but was ultimately surprised. For a gritty exploitation film, it seemed to have a definite polish, and was everything a drive-in movie should be. There were a few slow spots, but overall it moved at a good pace, and didn't lose my attention for a second. After 5 minutes of this movie, you know that it was made on a shoestring budget. This usually leads to poor acting, poor effects, and some pretty shoddy camera work. I'm happy to announce that this film had none of these three things. Sure it had its "oh whatever" moments, but these were few and far between, and when they did occur, I didn't mind overlooking them. If I wanted big budget special effects, I'd watch one of those stupid Lord of the Rings movies. No, I prefer something a little more hands-on and creative, which this movie delivered. The acting, for all intents and purposes, is quite good. Bhaskar Roy Chowdhury gave an exceptional performance as the satanist cult leader Horace Bones. Considering his background as a dancer and an artist, this role was quite the left turn. The lovely Lynn Lowry was also responsible for another standout performance. Oddly enough, she wasn't credited on the DVD, but I'm sure anyone who's seen this movie will remember her as the mute hippie who used an electric carver to dismember one of the town's residents.

Like all the other Grindhouse releases, this DVD came loaded with features. Without even popping the disc in, you've got some great artwork on the case, as well as a foldout of the original theatre lobby poster art, and a lengthy write up about the history of the film, as well as it's cast and crew. Looking at the disc, there's the audio commentary, production stills, a few nice featurettes, and some deleted scenes. I know every movie has them, but I had to bring them up only because of the alternate ending. It's maybe 90 seconds longer than the original, but I think it was just the twist the movie needed to end on, and I'm disappointed it didn't make the final cut.

I would have to recommend this movie based solely on the fact that it's 70's exploitation at its very best. I couldn't have asked for a cheesier, more ridiculous movie than this, and it was exactly the kind of movie I needed at the time. While it may not match up with some of the genre greats, it certainly holds its own and is one hell of a fun ride.

7/10.
