"You've never heard of Monster Rain? It's the most adorable thing."
Yes folks it's true, Jim Norton's Monster Rain has come to our beloved MvMMDI, and it is anything but adorable. It's been a long time coming, but Chad's recent addition of another standup special has convinced me it is doable. Now I have to just get something out of the way right from the get-go. Jim Norton is my favourite standup comedian. He has been since he came to the Opie & Anthony show in 1999, and when he finally received a host position in 2004. Since then I've been a devout fan, not missing a show, and owning all the O&A/Jim Norton paraphernalia I can get my fanboy hands on. Naturally, when I found out Li'l Jimmy was filming his second HBO special, I was as giddy as a school boy, and April until October was nothing more than a great big countdown.
In April of 2007, Jim Norton filmed an HBO special that would cement his position in the world of the comedy elite. This being his second TV special, he'd already worked out the little mistakes of his first performance, and really gave this one his all. Covering all sorts of topics from the JFK assassination, obnoxious TV commercials, relationships, and even "fucking that Dakota Fanning". Jimmy tackles these subjects with brutal honesty, no shame, and a very filthy mouth. Oh yeah, and for all of you out there who aren't "in-the-know" you'll find out exactly what Monster Rain means.
I think the reason I adore this man so much is because I feel I can relate to a lot of the material he covers. I can relate to his self loathing and off-colour jokes, as well as his tales of sexual deviancy. Even though this was filmed in April, and then released in October, the material still works today. It's topical, but it's not something that anyone with a little history of pop-culture or politics won't understand. If you take a look at George Carlin's body of work, you'll notice that no matter what you watch, all of it is still relevant to this day, and still just as funny as it was ten, twenty, even thirty years ago. Jim has this same writing style, in that you'll be able to look back on him in 10 years, and still find him just as funny as you do today.
My only complaint - I can't believe I have one - is that most of this material isn't fresh. To the average "I watch the odd standup special" Joe, this is a real gem. But to any O&A fan, it sort of feels like you've heard it all before. Don't get me wrong, I'd never heard these jokes before, but not missing a single show in years, catching every other TV appearance Jim's had, and reading his book several times, it was inevitable that the material would seem familiar. This is a minor flaw that I will overlook, as it is primarily my fault for obsessing over his material and not missing anything he's done in years.
So there you have it folks. In case you haven't figured it out, this gets a perfect from yours truly, and deserves a viewing by absolutely everyone. Still having your doubts? My mother, who is the stuffiest and most out-of-touch person I know, was laughing at even the raciest jokes in this special. That doesn't go a long way with the people who don't know her, but just take my word for it that she wouldn't laugh at something unless it was truly funny.

I remember when you and I would play Monster Rain
all the time. Of course I was always the champion
as you always went first, sometimes you would
waste no time.
