Angelus... a vampire so terrible his name was spoken in horrified whispers for centuries. He and his sire, Darla, left thousands of corpses in their wake until the day that Darla decided to give Angelus a young gypsy girl as a gift. The blood was sweet, but an angry band of gypsies tracked Angelus down and cursed him with a soul. Now able to feel remorse for the many he had killed, Angelus (now known simply as Angel) wandered the world for a hundred years in sorrow, drinking only the blood of animals. Eventually, he landed in Sunnydale, California. There he began to help a young vampire slayer named Buffy to fight evil. They fell in love, but a caveat of the gypsy curse, Angel will revert to the evil Angelus if he ever becomes perfectly happy, prevented the two from having a real relationship.

Season 1 begins with Angel, unable to stay with Buffy, moving to Los Angeles to fight the good fight by himself. He's quickly joined by Doyle, a seer sent by the Powers that Be to help Angel find those in need, and Cordelia Chase, a perky former-Sunnydale resident whose failing acting career forces her to become Angel's secretary. The three fight all manner of demons and other nasties that go unnoticed by most of the world: a doctor whose body parts can separate from him to stalk a woman, a demon lord that uses L.A.'s playboys to impregnate women with his spawn, and a demonic law firm named Wolfram & Hart whose clients may be even more evil than those representing them.

Angel Season 1 is a fantastic example of Joss Whedon's work. Nearly every character is interesting and well developed. The plots range from heart-string tuggers ("Episode 8: I Will Remember You" is pretty sad) to beat-em-up but always have depth. Compared to what I've seen of other Joss Whedon work, Angel is somewhat darker and more mature than Buffy but a bit more fantastical than Firefly (two other shows I recommend).

Overall, Season 1 is pretty good. It doesn't quite reach the beauty of the fifth season but certainly surpasses the abysmal horror that was Season 4 a.k.a. the Jasmine season a.k.a. the sucky season. Thereby, it is granted an 8/10.
