What is it with rednecks starring in horror comedies? It all started with Redneck Zombies (cheap pop for a film that was shot twenty minutes from my house), and over the years, we've had rednecks going up against (more) zombies, aliens, demons, and every other baddie one can conjure up. I can see how the comedy side of things comes into play, sure; after all, there's very few things that are funnier than hillbillies and fart jokes, and with our "Southern friends" in the leading roles, you can guarantee that you'll also get plenty of fart jokes along with them - a great two-for-one deal. But horror? Who ever decided that rednecks made perfect slaughter victims? Regardless, they fill that role perfectly here in Creature from the Hillbilly Lagoon, a film which turned out to be pretty damned entertaining.

Two sets of people find themselves out in a remote, wooded area for various reasons, and as both groups soon discover, there are hordes of killer fishmen roaming the area thanks to a shady chemical company dumping experimental toxins into the nearby pond. The first set of people - rednecks Clay (William DeCoff), Cooter (Patrick Pitu), Bubba (Adam Brown), and Bobby-Sue (Leigh Radziwon) - find themselves trying to keep hydrated with beer while also attempting to keep as many of the fishmen as possible filled with buckshot, while the other group consists of college students who are out here trying to get to the root of the problem by finding out what the toxins are and how the problem can be solved. Shannon (Tanith Fiedler), the unofficial leader of the student group, soon makes a couple of startling discoveries and revelations about the fishman problem, but will it be enough to put an end to their slaughtering rampage? Will the rednecks run out of beer? Why does the slutty girl become known as a fish-fucker? Those are the important questions one has to ponder while watching the film, and by the end of the running time, all will be revealed.

Coming out hot off the heels of POPcinema's other fishman movie, I have to say that Creature from the Hillbilly Lagoon is the better of the two films. While Splatter Beach was entertaining as hell and even featured Misty Mundae in one of the leading roles, I simply got more entertainment out of watching these rednecks and students square off against the fishmen. This is mainly because the film was so ridiculous and so campy that I couldn't help but laugh at the jokes which - in most other films - would have come off as downright lame. A beer can to the heart as a way of killing? Horny fishmen who also double as butlers? Yeah, it's stupid, but the filmmakers here knew how to make it work.

There are some pacing issues to be found in what could probably be attributed to an effort to stretch it out to a feature length film; there's really only about fifty or fifty-five minutes worth of material here, but it manages to clock in at around eighty when all is said and done. This does lead to a handful of scenes which I could have done without, but this wasn't as big of a deal as it easily could have been as there are plenty of great moments sprinkled throughout and the padded scenes never run on for too long. Besides, can you ever really have too much when it comes to rednecks? I think not.

Overall, it's a campy film that does everything that it could have hoped to accomplish. It's funny in spots, hilarious in others, offensive when need be, and always over the top. The cast members are above average for this type of film, and the creature effects look surprisingly good. For all of that, I have to go with an 8/10.

As soon as this hits the $5.50 rack at Target, I'm there.

Oddly enough, this sounds like something I want to see.
