Cannibal films really aren't my thing due to the fact that nearly every one of them is almost completely identical: a group of Americans will head into the jungle, we'll see some legit animal cruelty, and finally, the Americans will do something to piss off the cannibals and pay for it with their lives. It's always the same settings with the same tribal warriors and the same saggy-tittied women, so if you've seen one, you've pretty much seen them all. With that said, if you're only going to see one of them, this Cannibal Holocaust should be the chosen one.

Remember that? I wrote it about four months ago, and since these films all tend to feature the exact same settings and interchangeable characters, I figured that I could get away with reusing something as well. The statements above mostly apply to this movie as well, but to be fair, a couple of details have been changed. A pair of Americans - Robert (Massimo Foschi) and Rolf (Ivan Rassimov) - wind up running through the jungle after having some plane trouble, the cannibals are hot on their trails, Robert gets kidnapped and has to suffer some abuse, he eventually escapes, and in the thrilling climax, the Americans meet up once again to run through the jungle some more. Well, looking at it like that, I suppose that it's pretty much a carbon copy of all the others, eh?

Prior to watching this earlier tonight, I had pretty fond memories of it; after all, it was my introduction to the cannibal genre of films years and years ago after I plucked a VHS copy of it - simply entitled "Cannibal" in that format - out of the bargain bin at Woolworths (that alone should tell you how long ago this was). I watched it a few times back when I was a wee little lad, but I honestly have no clue what became of that damned movie. So then, I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that this was the same movie that I had seen so many years ago and settled in to relive some of those great scenes that I remembered oh so well. The problem arose when I realized that I enjoyed this film so much back then because the genre was still new to me, and now that I've seen a couple more of these films, this one really doesn't bring anything new to the table.

What does this one bring to the table? Well, for starters, it has to be the single most penis-centric cannibal film that I have ever seen. Now, I expect to see some cannibal cock when they run around naked and do their tribal dances and whatnot; that much is to be expected and can easily be overlooked. However, in addition to that, we also get to see the cannibals playing with Robert's uncircumcised penis, we watch some cannibal children piss on the man (with plenty of close-ups of their little penises), and we even witness the gorgeous Me Me Lai give him a handjob. I've seen gay porn with less penis on display than this title, and trust me when I say that that was an accomplishment.

There's also the usual violence to be found, with scenes of both the simulated cannibal-on-man variety as well as the actual animal "snuff" shots that seem to be a requirement for this genre. A man has his arm chewed apart by ants, guts are ripped out and eaten, human bodies are cooked and devoured, and another man winds up with a spiked ball going through his chest. We also watch as a large lizard is eaten by a snake, and we even get to see the cannibals kill and skin an alligator for our viewing pleasure. None of this was terribly impressive, but it was there and I'm sure some of you will enjoy it.

As mentioned, I'm not a huge fan of these films, so my final rating will probably need to be adjusted according to your tastes. I'm going to go with a 6/10, but if you enjoy these films, add a few points as it's not bad for the genre, just a little underwhelming (though, being a fan, I'm sure you're used to that). On the other hand, knock a few points off of that if you're new to the genre: this one isn't bad, but you could pick a much better selection for your first film.

I think this is probably the second best of the bunch. It had the same realism as Cannibal Holocaust, but focused more on Robert's survival. It still had its fair share of cannibal moments, but it didn't feel too similar. Nothing is more annoying than watching these genre films and having the same stuff thrown at you time and again. Thankfully, this one didn't do that. 9/10
