Emo Pill is an exercise in style. It's an exercise in the surreal. It's a dream. It's a nightmare. It's an illusion. It's reality. Miles sits on his bed, knife in hand, on the verge of suicide. He finds solace, and delusions of a happy home life, in the form of a mysterious pill found on his nightstand. The pill is given to him by an angelic deity identifying himself only as 'The Divine Providence.' He descends into a dream world created by this mysterious pill and experiences the life he wishes he had... --IMDb

Not quite sure what to make of "Emo Pill".

As a cinematic experience, it offers very little in the form of entertainment value. As an artistic experiment, it offers some insight and some beauty and a ton of creativity. You just have to decide what means more to you. Would you rather be entertained for twenty minutes, or watch something creative taking place. Maybe those are one in the same for you? For me, I have to go with the former, unfortunately. I like to be entertained. After about five minutes of "Emo Pill", I had had enough. I wanted more bang for my buck, so to speak.

At 18 minutes, "Emo Pill" starts off with the central character, Miles (Timothy Farmer), an adopted kid on the verge of suicide. He then discovers a magical pill that is left for him by The Divine Providence (Steve Brown). This pill takes him into a dream world, where his life has turned out exactly how he would have hoped. The entire film is scored by Mario Brian De Santis, and that music becomes very distracting. The film might have worked better if we had actually been given the chance to hear some dialogue and pay more attention to the events unfolding. It played more like a very sedate music video than a short film, and that was my primary problem with it.

But, as mentioned previously, it is a very creative and very artsy flick. The film is not pretentious, but you feel pretentious for watching it. It's an exercise in levels -- how much can I subject the audience to before they need something with a little more dash? But, what director Anthony Spadaccini gives us is more beautiful than it is entertaining, and that probably works for a lot of people. I checked out the IMDB page for this film, and it seems to be rather praised, but I assume that praise is coming from individuals who thought "The Brown Bunny" was a tour de force of cinema -- arthouse folks who love the unusual and the peculiar. There is nothing wrong with those people, and there is nothing wrong with this film (per se) -- it's just not my cup of tea.

When asked, "Will we ever see a Woody Allen film that uses CGI or big budget explosions?" Woody Allen replied to this question -- "The only people who rely on that are people who can't write a decent script." No truer words could be spoken. "Emo Pill" is relatable in that -- the music felt like a cop out. This was an engaging story and I wanted to see what would have happened with dialogue and set-up and a scripted dissection of these events and these people. I don't think that director Spadaccini is lacking in the writing department -- having just watched "Unstable" and "Monday Morning" -- the talent is there. However, it is not being utilized, and that is the biggest problem with "Emo Pill", for me. I wanted more. I didn't get what I needed, cinematically. 5/10.

I'm going with Billy Ray on this. I think it needed to be longer, and it needed to have some dialogue. 6/10
