The hard-boiled, maladroit, and single police lieutenant, Frank Drebin, is back in action to right the wrongs, this time, in the renewable energy industry. With Dr. Albert Meinheimer's program directly threatening all the major oil, coal, and nuclear companies, and with the beautiful Jane Spencer now in the arms of another man, Frank has his work cut out for him, as powerful enemies intend on replacing the clean-energy advocate with a cunning impersonator. Can Drebin, the grizzled eco-warrior, save the environment? Will Jane realize what she's missing?

"I couldn't believe it was her. It was like a dream. But there she was, just as I remembered her. That delicately beautiful face. And a body that could melt a cheese sandwich from across the room. And breasts that seemed to say..."Hey! Look at these!" She was the kind of woman who made you want to drop to your knees and thank God you were a man! She reminded me of my mother, all right. No doubt about it."
They're back -- yes, all of the gang from the original "The Naked Gun" film are back, with the addition of Robert Goulet as the villainous Quentin Hapsburg. And David Zucker is back too, as co-writer and director. This time Lt. Frank Drebin must jump to action when a scientist (Richard Griffiths) about to publish a report on the need for solar energy in the future is kidnapped by Jane's new boss, who represents a group of oil tycoons. Can Frank save Dr. Albert S. Meinheimer from certain doom? Will he re-kindle his love affair with Jane? Will O.J. Simpson make it through the entire film without being subpoenaed for first degree murder? "The Naked Fun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear" answers all of these questions in typical slapstick style.
"Go ahead, threaten me like you have the American people for so long! You're part of a dying breed, Hapsburg, like people who can name all fifty states! The truth hurts, doesn't it, Hapsburg? Oh sure, maybe not as much as landing on a bicycle with the seat missing, but it hurts!"
I would be hard-pressed to name all of my favorite scenes from this installment. How about the scene where Frank goes SCUBA diving -- "Frank, the water's on the other side." How about the scene where Frank is tied up next to Dr. Meinheimer and tries to get himself loose, i.e. bowling balls, pool balls, anvils, etc. How about the scene where Frank & The Gang are dressed up as a mariachi band, doing their thing on stage. These are just a few of the scenes that make "The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear" totally equal to the original, and maybe even a little better at some points. What makes it work is that everyone kept the same energy, the same tone and the same comic timing as the original. It just feels right. Nothing seems forced, all the gags seem original, and even the recycled gags have a new life to them. This is just a damned funny movie: "I'm sorry I can't be more optimistic, Doctor, but we've got a long road ahead of us. It's like having sex. It's a painstaking and arduous task that seems to go on and on forever, and just when you think things are going your way, nothing happens". Come on -- if that doesn't make you laugh, then nothing will. 10/10.

I'd say it's on par with the original. Pretty
funny, but nothing extremely hilarious.
7/10
