A dark comedy about witchcraft, depression, and the sexual sibling rivalry between a gay man and his white trash sister. Family jealousy reaches twisted new heights as mentally-unstable brother and exhibitionistic sister engage in a perverse competition. Add to this stew, a neighbor (who's a witch on disability) and you have a campy exercise in dysfunction. --IMDb

I've heard of some intense sibling rivalry before (having a brother of my own, I could certainly tell some tales), but the pair found in Cave People certainly puts most other rivalries to shame. Josh (Matthew Gardner), a "basket case" who sits in his room and draws all day and his - how to put this gently - "easy" and "free-loving" sister Tammy (Kerry Gudjohnsen) live together in a modest home, living off of an inheritance that their now-deceased parents left behind. It seems as though Tammy comes home with a new man every day and, being the easy lady that she is, never makes the men wait for a second date before getting down to business. Josh enjoys watching and timing the sex that his sister has so that he can later taunt her about her premature-ejaculating choice in men, and Tammy enjoys letting him watch knowing that he wants a love of his own. Twisted, eh?

When he meets and befriends his neighbor Gina (the lovely Caridad Francisca), we at home learn two things: one, that Josh is actually gay and that he lusts after his sister's latest boyfriend Tyrone (David Nelson), and two, that Gina is a witch who wants to help her new best friend in any way that she can. A plot is hatched to cast a love spell on Tyrone so that he'll fall in love with Josh, and to add just a little fuel to the fire, Josh will finally be able to one-up his sister.

This is the second movie included with James Mirarchi's double feature of short films (the first being Beer and Art), and to be honest, I actually enjoyed this one a whole lot more. The interaction between this pair of siblings is genuine, and watching them go at it only to make up later certainly brought back some memories of my own experiences. The hook of his homosexuality and desire for Tammy's boyfriend was both humorous and interesting, and although I got the idea that he was gay long before it was confirmed, I definitely didn't see the "payback" coming.

The performances given by all involved were also damned good, lending an air of credibility to the story which could have easily been lost with a less-capable cast. I watch a lot of indie / low-budget movies so I'm used to having to overlook the occasional friends-and-family performances, but everyone involved here came off as seasoned professionals whether they actually were or not.

Definitely check this one out. Both films found in this double feature set are worth your attention, and even though I enjoyed this one more than Beer and Art, I can't say that I wasn't pleasantly surprised and entertained by both. 9/10.
