With the recent and untimely passing of the great Bob Clark, it seems only fitting that I review what I consider to be his best film, the comedy to end all comedies - "Porky's". First, you have to understand that this film invented crude humor - at least, the kind we currently associate with films like "American Pie" - John Waters invented it, but Bob Clark took it mainstream. This film was the highest grossing motion picture of 1982 and one of the highest grossing films ever in Canada. It turned Bob Clark into a sensation and it allowed for the subsequent sequels, both decent enough.
Set in 1954 in the town of Angel Beach - "Porky's" follows a group of high school students who want to lose their virginity and set out to get into one of the most exclusive bars around, Porky's. Along the way, everything happens to this group. One of them is manhandled by their mannish gym teacher. My favorite scene is when they all take a trip out to a cabin, where an event is staged involving a large African-American man with a machete. Hilarious. The humor in this film is very risky for 1982, but it tackles it with tongue-in-cheek adolescence and a load of fun.
I find it so astonishing that Bob Clark managed to tackle just about every genre over the course of his career - from horror to raunchy comedy to family film to thriller. He did everything. This film is his best work because it was based loosely on his own experiences as a teenager. His love for this film drips off every frame and every sequence. On the surface, it looks like just another dumb, raunchy teen comedy - but on the inside, it's much more. Don't go in looking for the meaning of life or anything, but "Porky's" will always be - for me anyways - a comedic masterpiece.
10/10.

One of the few comedies that is timeless. And it's
Canadian, which proves we're not totally useless
up here. Everything about this movie was perfect.
