I love short-films.
I've said it once and I'll say it again and again. A good short-film is the perfect exercise in everything film is as an art-form. Stories told, art directed, and, normally, a fine, brief vision that the filmmaker wanted all of us to experience.
Plus, they're short. You know how much I fucking work? Too much. A short-film is a godsend for the tight-scheduled, especially a good one. Now, let me put it bluntly: "Purgatory, Inc." is not a good short-film.
It's excellent.
Purgatory: Your first stop in moving on to the eternity of your non-corporeal existence.
We are greeted with a clerk working in the processing of deceased souls onto their eternal resting place (designated by the rules and regulations of their respective beliefs, obviously) who is quickly placed with the recently-deceased Christopher McNamee: Killed by a falling suitcase, in a kayak along with his husband Matt. Now, things should go fine... except Chris is Catholic. And married to a man.
Ooooops...
Let me start off by saying, I don't think I've seen such an excellent world detailed, explained and realized in 6 and a half minutes. I mean, wow, the art-direction, the characters, the effects; everything comes together so well to make it one of the most ingenious atmospheres made in such a minimalist design.
The performances are realistic and utterly hilarious. Not a moment of this one was I bored, disinterested or just un-amused. This is a great film, by all genuine merits; it's funny, smart, well-observed and just a great time.
See this one, no matter what it takes.
