Many movies in the 70's and early 80's dealt with the issues of prostitution and the seedy underbelly of society. None were better, in my humble opinion, than Vice Squad. Starring Season Hubley (Escape from New York), Wings Hauser (I don't know) and Gary Swanson (Anyone??), Vice Squad has had a small cult following for years and since it's new release on DVD last year, it has gained even more fans.
Made in 1983, the movie tells the story of a Los Angeles prostitute named Princess (Hubley) and her struggles with being a single mother and making a living being a hooker. Princess runs into trouble when she sets up a hot-under-the-collar, hooker-killing pimp named Ramrod (Hauser). Princess must then watch over each shoulder as Ramrod is out for revenge! But not if Det. Tom Walsh (Swanson) has anything to do with it! He has been after Ramrod for a long time, and he'll be damned if he'll let him kill another hooker. Set on the streets of Los Angeles, Vice Squad is a knock-down, shoot-um-up thriller that should be required viewing for all human beings.
While Vice Squad severely lacks a good script and decent actors, it does perfectly captures that time period in the world. You really do get a sense of what it was like to be on the streets of LA at that time. Similar to the feeling you get from Taxi Driver. You can almost feel all the depravity that was rampant on the streets of LA in 1983.
While some may balk at this movie as being poorly made and even poorly acted, while I am not disagreeing with you, it is still worth while picking up. If nothing more than to see Wings Hauser beat up and kill a hooker with a coat hanger. Vice Squad is entertaining, funny and great to watch with your significant other.
