Red Princess Blues Animated: The Book of Violence is an animated prequel to the upcoming Red Princess Blues feature-length film that introduces us to the character of Princess (voiced by Paula Garces), a young girl who has set out to find her father. Her search leads her to Nino, a strange fellow who promptly informs her that her father is dead and that he had promised her dad that he would take care of her if she ever came looking for him. Nino is true to his word and allows Princess to live with him, but he's also a firm, disciplined man who immediately gives Princess numerous chores and jobs to complete around his bookstore, and this leads Princess to finding an old chest full of books. Upon further inspection, she finds that these musty old hardbacks are actually storage containers for numerous deadly weapons, and from there... well, that's about where we come across the credits.
Did I mention that this is a short film? Yes, this one only runs for about six minutes, and it really only exists to show off the animation prowess of artist Dan Cregan while also giving us a brief teaser of the Red Princess Blues film. The Asian-inspired animation is gorgeous - damned near everything in here was hand drawn - and the film did a good job of piquing my interest in the feature-length version of this story. That was its sole purpose, and it served its purpose well.
Beyond that, there's not a whole lot that can be said about Red Princess Blues Animated. It's a six minute film that will likely wind up as a bonus feature on the inevitable Red Princess Blues DVD, and although it doesn't really give us any solid information about the plot or characters of said film, it does make this particular viewer want to see it all the more. I'm giving it a 7/10 as a standalone product, as I thought that the animation was extremely well done and it did exactly what I assume the filmmakers intended for it to do.
