This was a film I just found lying around the local DVD store, for sale. It was a film I watched all the time when I was younger, and it always seemed to play right after "Dead Heat" on Cable. Back when zombie movies were in their prime, "Night of the Comet" was one of the highlights of 1984.
Think "Return of the Living Dead" meets "Valley Girl" and that's basically what you have here -- a zombie film that was aimed at a teenage audience. Two valley girls, Reggie (Catherine Mary Stewart) and Samantha (Kelli Maroney) love shopping, and that's all they seem to want to do. When a comet is scheduled to blast Earth for the first time in 65 years, they could care less -- all they want to see is the perfect pair of shoes. But, then, the morning after the blast, they wake up to find everyone gone -- just piles of ash underneath party hats all along the streets. They soon discover they're the only people left in Los Angeles -- well, except for a pack of blood thirsty zombies who were made that way by the passing comet. Comedy and horror ensues.
The film doesn't take itself too seriously and it really does poke fun at the zombie genre, while still delivering some very funny moments and some very enjoyable gore effects. But, it was aimed at a teenage audience, unlike other films of the time, and I guess why that it sometimes feels too toned down for its own good. The premise was one of the more interesting of the time, and the "Valley Girl" scenario is really ingenious. The acting, however, is not some of the best you'll see. Character actor Geoffrey Lewis has a nice cameo as a man named Carter in the film, but it's really the best performance in the entire film. But, the performances don't take away from your overall enjoyment of the film. "Night of the Comet" is campy and fun and a fine zombie film from the 1980's.

I loved this movie when I was a kid and still look around for it here and there..

Did we watch different cuts of this movie or something? I picked up the semi-recent DVD release (alright, the one from seven months ago), and aside from a quick glance at a bloody wrench and a small chunk of flesh, I didn't see a drop of blood in here. It's still a good movie, don't get me wrong (8/10 sounds about right), but a little curious about that one.

But, to me -- two attractive women in a film is the same as gore.

I loved the Kelli Maroney part the best.Playing a clueless cheerleader was a prefect fit.
