Disclaimer: I've only played Resident Evil parts 1 and 2 on Playstation. Those were played quite some time ago. I may have forgotten some details from the games.
They really dropped the proverbial ball on this one. Instead of taking the insanely popular video game and making it into a movie, they borrowed the zombies, the licker, and the various names and made something totally different. Instead of using the fully developed, nicely done storyline from the games, they just threw some crap together and slapped on the Resident Evil title. Now, I'm all for directors changing some stuff up in remakes or game-to-movie deals, but this was just crazy.
The game basically puts you in a house, where you need to find the other people. The house is swarming with zombies. You need to kill the zombies. Pretty simple concept, but it worked out quite nicely in the two games I've played... so why couldn't they base it on that?
And my biggest gripe with this, was the complete lack of zombie action to be found. The first zombie is shown at 42:00 into the movie, and there's a severe shortage of zombie scenes; I didn't time it or anything, but I'd venture to guess that there's thirty minutes (out of 1:40:00) of on-screen zombie time. Throwing in the licker as they did was lame. He got a grand total of one kill, and two short scenes. Maybe this was done because the CGI they used to create it was so shitty? Who knows, I sure don't.
Before watching this, I thought I'd at least halfway enjoy it; I'm a fan of the game series and I love zombie movies, so this should be right up my alley. No sir, with all the fuckup's that were to be found, this was utter crap.
On the subject of the zombies: the effects that were used were balls. With the exception of three or four "big-scene" zombies, most looked like normal humans with no makeup whatsoever. Now, I realize this kinda fit into the storyline, but they're REANIMATED CORPSES. Doesn't that warrant just a touch of a different look?
After all my griping, there was a few nice things going on. The storyline, even though it had nothing to do with the game series, was decently put together. The one licker kill was nice, what was shown of it... as were the very few zombie kills. The acting was nicely done, and the soundtrack was great. I suppose these few things would bump the rating up to a solid 4/10.

I thought this was a very good film. I thought it was highly over rated but still very good.

I actually find this movie to be pretty good. If you wanna compact the first Resident Evil game into 1:40:00, I think that's too short a time. 6/10

Ok, I'm not into the videogames to compare, but I thought it was a good action movie.

I agree, this was a solid action/horror blend that did nothing for the game. But, honestly, who cares? 6.6/10 from me.

The action was alright on this film, but the acting was pretty awful. I really hated how more then half the crew at the start did not die by zombies. It's a zombie film, so let's have them not die by zombies. 4/10

Nah the fastest run I have seen on RE:Director's Cut arranged mode as Chris was 1:36:22
The movie was good, but it is no where near as good as the video game's storyline.

I like looking at Milla Jovoich. So, I enjoyed this. I forgot I saw it till I bought the blu-ray box set. I've never played the game. But, probably the reason they didn't follow the storyline of the game is for plot/characterization. This isn't so much a zombie movie as a good guy/bad guy film. Alice and co versus the Umbrella Corporation. This is just good mindless fun. Plus, Milla is just HOT.
