Chick flicks are something I will only see if I am a fan of the actors/actresses in it, or I think that maybe I'll get some by watching it. For neither of these two reasons, I recently watched Music and Lyrics, the newest installment in writer/director Marc Lawrence's career. I was surprised to find that I didn't leave or fall asleep before the movie ended.
The movie takes place in Manhattan where a washed up, teen pop sensation of the 80s is given the chance to relive his finest hours when a current teen idol wants to perform a song with him; all he has to do is make the song in less than a week. The only problem is he doesn't know how to write lyrics; only the music.
ENTER : Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore); a replacement plant waterer for the above-mentioned Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant). As it turns out Fisher is conveniently a 'brilliant' lyricist and Fletcher and his manager (Brad Garrett) immediately try to get her to help him meet the deadline so he can rekindle his old life.
The suspense builds as the deadline draws nearer and nearer and still little progress is done. I won't give away what happens next but I can tell you that it is far from creative. While Fisher and Fletcher are working together they try and help each other get over one of their greatest problems and of course, a relationship builds.
The acting for the most part was really good. I wasn't sure where Fletcher's accent was coming from though since it was assumed that he had lived in Manhattan for the past years since his career fell from grace. I do love accents though so this didn't really bother me. Kristen Johnston's performance, though small, was still amusing, and I believe, one of the best ones in the film.
The music in the movie was often decent and a few 80s pop jokes were thrown in which was great since I actually understood them. The movie was a fantasy compared to how most 80s pop bands end up but it was still a cute little movie acceptable for children and adults. There was a good enough flow, the acting wasn't bad, and of course, the fairy tale ending.

For some reason, just a review of this film on here seems to cheapen the other films. God Damn you, Hugh Grant!!!
