The Mangler

I saw some crap on Adult Swim a few nights ago.... Futurama? Family Guy? One of those.... anywho, they had a bit on there with Stephen King, pitching an idea to the publishers. They ask him what his new book is about. King looks puzzled, then grabs a lamp, and goes on and on about a killer lamp..... "Spooky, huh!??!" The publisher says "You're just not trying anymore". Was that a jab at this movie? Whom knows.

In fairness, I've read the short story that this is based on back in the day, and it wasn't this bad. Same basic premise, but they sure got a touch of the stupids in the ideas for the movie. A laundry machine that kills people..... well, that was in the book. Now, my memory may suck, but I don't recall said laundry machine crawling around chasing people in the novel. The whole ending, the last half hour or so, looks like a 6 year old thought it up.

And of course, there's a sequel, and my sadist-ass is going to hunt it down. Yippee.

1/10
2/10 for some very nice gore
3/10 for some very nice gore and a hell of a performance by Robert Englund.

"The Mangler" primarily sucks because Tobe Hooper is a horrible director. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was the only card he had up his sleave. Robert Englund does a very nice job here and some of the atmosphere is a little creepy...it really does feel like a Stephen King story. Otherwise, this is a pretty lame piece of shit. 5/10.

Actually, in the end of the short story, the Manger does come to life and become mobile. Granted, it is nothing like what is portrayed in the movie.
