Since this site has been on a 1980's kick lately, I thought it fitting to review one of the quintessential films from that particular period, the comedy "Earth Girls Are Easy". My sister and her friends used to love this film. They owned the VHS copy of it and watched it all the time. I finally watched it for the first time when I was eight or so, but I don't really remember it for the first time until I was around eleven-ish. It's one of those films you love when you are younger, but then see again as an adult and realize how truly awful it actually is. "Earth Girls Are Easy" tries to be quirky and it tries to be unique, but it just falls short most of the time and turns into nonsense.
The plot of the film is simple -- Three extraterrestrials (Jeff Goldblum, Damon Wayans, Jim Carrey) land in a girl named Valerie's (Geena Davis) pool and then embark to halt her wedding plans to Ted (Charles Rocket), with the assistance of Valerie's friend Candy (Julie Brown). Musical numbers and slapstick comedy ensue, MTV style. This film was so obviously made for the MTV crowd. The flashy neon colors, the absurd plot, the comedic actors who would actually go on to be some of the most successful in the business. Everything about this film was carefully selected to appeal to a certain 1980's demographic -- teenagers. It was even directed by Julien Temple, a director who has really only tackled music videos and concerts since this film's release.
All of that said, "Earth Girls Are Easy" does have its share of funny moments. Jeff Goldblum is rather likable as the head alien, Mac. He does a good job with his oddball sort of humor, and it works. Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans are all over the place in their roles, and Julie Brown is downright annoying, as usual. Geena Davis is probably wondering how she and Goldblum went from starring in one of the greatest science fiction films ever made, "The Fly", to starring in a musical about neon aliens. I am wondering the same thing. All I can hope is that they were all treated to massive paychecks for their performances. At the very least, this film helped catapult Jim Carrey's career a bit more and gave teenage girls the heartthrob they so painfully wanted -- Jeff Goldblum. "Earth Girls Are Easy" is not bad, but it's a hop, skip and jump over the moon away from good. 6/10.
