It seems as though any movie that at least breaks even at the box office will require a sequel, even if said sequel is a simple direct-to-video affair. Sometimes, these sequels work: perhaps there were loose ends to tie up from the original, or maybe there was still plenty of life in the story and another outing would please the fans. Most of the time, however, sequels are made simply to cash in on a "guaranteed" cash-cow and the quality is lacking if not non-existent. Wayne's World 2 sort of falls in the middle: it's a good movie, but something just seemed to be missing.
The sequel finds Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) reprising their roles as a pair of public-access heroes in their hometown of Aurora. Wayne is still with his girlfriend Cassandra (Tia Carrere), she's still trying to get a record deal, Garth still can't get a break with the ladies (but he has pubes now!), and things are pretty much as they were at the end of the original film. After having a chat with Jim Morrison and a "weird naked Indian dude" in a dream, Wayne comes to the realization that his goal in life is to put together a music festival, even though he has no connections to any bands other than the one that his girlfriend is in. With the help of former Rolling Stones roadie Del Preston (Ralph Brown), he sets out to raise the money and get up with the big-name bands to help with his show. Meanwhile, a record producer (Christopher Walken) is eying up Cassandra for more than just her vocal talents, but will Wayne even notice?
Again, this sequel is not a bad movie, but it just didn't come together as well as the original. It's pretty obvious that it was quickly written after the massive success of Wayne's World, and the end result is a fair number of scenes that just didn't work or were simple retreads of gems from the original. The whole "greedy executive chasing Cassandra" angle had already been done, and although there was a slightly new spin put on it here (her dad getting involved), it just felt like too much of a rehash for my taste.
My other chief complaint is that, quite simply, this sequel wasn't as funny as the original. Now, don't get me wrong: there are some damned good scenes here, with the improv YMCA performance at a gay bar coming in at the top of the list. However, the high spots of the film aren't nearly as plentiful this time around, as there are only a handful of scenes that are truly memorable. The rest may pull a chuckle or a grin at best, if you can overlook the fact that half of these jokes had already been done in the previous film.
It may seem as though I didn't enjoy this movie, but that's not entirely true. As mentioned, there were a handful of great scenes combined with even more decent scenes, and the chemistry between Mike Myers and Dana Carvey is still as strong here was it was a year prior. There's plenty of pop culture references that pull some laughs, and the cameo appearances come fast and furious (Aerosmith, Chris Farley, Rip Taylor, Heather Locklear, Kim Basinger, Drew Barrymore, Tim Meadows, Charlton Heston, and Ed O'Neill are but some of the names), but overall, it's a fairly big step down from the original. Wayne's World 2 will probably please fans of the original, but the magic was definitely fading this time around. 6/10.

Wow, talk about a sequel almost being better than the original. "Wayne's World 2" is packed with the same kind of humor and gags as the original, and they're all just as funny as in the original. Christopher Walken takes on the Rob Lowe villain role from the original and he is hysterical. From the YMCA performance, to the hilarious fight between Wayne and Cassandra's father -- "Wayne's World 2" is absolutely wonderful. 9.5/10.

What a true sequel should be. Something that adds on to the first. A compliment to it's predecessor. 9/10.
